POPPY DAY

RECORD COLLECTION IN CITY OVER £I,OOO RAISED Poppy Day continues to make a strong appeal to the general public, the amount collected by tho Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday in the city and suburbs being £I,OBO 7s 7d, which constitutes a record in the history of the movement. From early in the morning till darkness fell willing helpers were on the streets selling poppies, and others were making a house-to-house canvass in the suburbs, and, when the takings were counted last night, it was found that £I,OBO 7a 7d had been collected, as compared with £1,007 9s 7d raised last year in the city and suburbs. The organisation was based on the same lines as last year, and the secretary (Mr O. L. Ferens), who organised tho appeal, states that he is thoroughly satisfied with the results obtained, the response of the public being extremely generous. He wishes to express appreciation of' the very courteous manner in which citizens met the appeals of tlia collectors. ’

Warm appreciation of the wholehearted support of the public was expressed to-day by the president (Mr A. Thomas) of the Dunedin R.S.A. “ The present figures constitute a record,” fie said, “ and it is expected that when all tho town and country returns come to hand last year’s total of £2,013 6s will be easily beaten. The present result could not have been attained without the ready assistance of a large band of willing and efficient helpers, and the asociation is proud of the loyal support that is always forthcoming for this,appeal.”. The sale of poppies was completed at 6 o’clock, and shortly after 8 o’clock the city total was known. This was made possible through the services of a number of tellers from the National Bank of New Zealand, who shared the work of counting the money. Following is a list of the amounts collected at the various stalls and in the various districts with the names of those in charge:— , £ s.' d.
