WITH THE DXERS

RECEPTION OF LATE All wise DXers have been active lately, as conditions both on the broadcast band and short wave have been quite good. Particularly good reception is noticed from Australia, including YKs. Europeans are still available, although now tapering o/f in strength. American stations are coining in earlier than ever, some even being heard before 5 o’clock on a good night. WBT (1.080), WHO (1,000), WBZ (990), WSB (740), and WHAS (820) are among the earliest to be heard. KQW has been particularly good on 1,010 k.c.. working as late as 7 p.m. American DX programmes are now very few and far between, as their DX season is practically over. Special YK. broadcasts are being arranged by the New Zealand DX Radio Association as follows; On file morning of April 25, thirty YK2s have been asked to special. On the morning of May 6 over twenty-five VK4s and 7s nave also been asked to special. On the morning of June 3 nearly forty YKos have'been requested to come on the air. Each of these mornings is followed by a holiday, so that DXers will bo able to make up any lost sleep. SCRAPS OF INTEREST 4WK, Warwick, Queensland (900 k.c.), will be coming on the air in two wceics’ time. Shortly afterwards 7NT, Ivelso, Tasmania (7,000 watts, 750 k.c.), 4CA, Cairns, Queensland (1,450 k. and 7BU, Burnie, Tasmania (1,360 k.c.) will also be coming on the air, the two latter probably with 50 watts. The new call book will bo out in approximately one week, and will be more complete than ever. SPECIAL PROGRAMMES TO-NIGHT. CMOX. Havana, 1,325 k.c., 6.10. WGES, Chicago, 1,360 k.c., 6.15-7. TO-MORROW. YOGY, St. John’s, 840 k.c., 6.10 p.m. KIDW, Lamar, 1,420 k.c., S p.m. CJAT, Trail, 910 k.c., 8.10 p.m. THURSDAY. WGES, Chicago, 1,360 k.c., 6.15-7 p.m. APRIL 20. WGES, Chicago, 1,360 k.c,, 6.15-7 p.m. SHORTWAVE WANDERINGS XEBT, Mexico City, has shifted its frequency, and is now operating on 50 metres. It is coming in at excellent volume about sunset. On Sundays COC, Havana, is still presenting its international programmes, when reports are acknowledged from all corners of the world. It is heard advertising the Havana lottery, and reading lists of previous winners. VE96W, Bournville, closes at 5 p.m., but is badly interfered with by W9XF, which is one of the best stations to be heard at sunset. A Spanish speaking station has been heard on approximately 6,070 k.c., closing at 5 p.m. A good logging last week was HJ3ABD, located at Bogota, Columbia, and heard on 40.54 metres. There are a number of South. Americans to be heard during the late afternoons, but us station calls are seldom given, listeners might experience difficulty in identifying them. The usual method of calling is “La Vox do ” (location), and by checking in an up-to-date call book it is usually possible to trace these stations. Daveutry can be heard well on four sessions—that is, from transmission No. l, commencing at 6.15 p.m., until shortly after 8 a.m., when on No. 4 session. The test programmes directed to Wester,n Canada between 3 and 4 p.m. arc usually fair towards the close, but the loudest and most constant signal on the 31-metre band at this hour comes from Germany. Conditions have been below par this week, and little of interest has been logged apart from a special session dedicated to New Zealand by PCJ, Holland., GOOD RECEPTION BY AN AUSTRALIAN Writing to an Australian magazine a Queensland listener states: —“I have heard IVA clearly on two occasions this week between 8 and 9 p.m. on a twovalve receiver. The programme on March 13 consisted of records, and that on March 14 of band music. The set is a simple two-valve all-waver, using plug-in coil, the circuit comprising a 215 generative detector, transformer, coupled to 8406 driving a cone speaker.’’ LISTENING AT ROXBURGH A correspondent writes from Roxburgh to say that ho is receiving shortwave stations at present “ as good as any New Zealand stations.” They are all" over the place, he adds, and stations can be received at any time of the day or night. In his opinion, VXD, “ Silver Wireless,” Suva, is worth listening to any evening except Sunday between 5.30 and 6.30. LOCAL DX R.A. MEETING Members arc advised that I here will not be a meeting of the local branch of the I DX Radio Association during Easter week, but that the next meeting will be on May 2, at 7.30, in the club room, Lower Octagon,
