SEASONABLE WORK

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN Peas, dwarf and early varieties, should be sown into well-prepared trenches, also broad beans, early lonpod to commence with. There is still time to sow onions (Giant Rocca) into welldrained and prepared beds. ' Lettuce, cabbage, and cauliflower seed, for planting out in early spring, may still be sown. I would advise sowing in drills. Before sowing the seed give a dressing of blood and bone or superphosphate. This will help the young plants to make _ plenty of fibrous roots for transplanting later. Keep the surface of the soil between rows of all growing crops open. This will allow ventilation to the roots and also keep under such pest as slugs, slaters, etc. Where plants are affected with cabbage fly, dust with slacked lime when the weather is suitable, over the foliage and surrounding ground. Carrots, main crop, can be lifted and stored away with a covering of sand or ashes or similar material if the ground is wanted for any other purpose or if the crop is affected with wire worm. In case of the ground containing wire worms it is advisable to dijj back, and give the soil a heavy dressing of shell lime (hot) . If the same piece of ground is required for roots next season it should be dressed with Ti puli to, sown in the drills when sowing seed next season. , ' ■ All ground that is vacant should be dug and allowed to lie rough through the winter. Asparagus beds should be cleaned of all weeds and the grass carrying seed laid down and covered with a' good dressing of well rotted manure or grass cuttings from the lawn mixed with leaf mould or similar light material. Do not tread the manure or dressings down. •
