The aluminium, tip of the Washington Monument, at Washington, was found to be remarkably well preserved, when inspected recently* and the engraved inscription recording its placement on December 6, 1884, appeared as sharp and clear after cleaning as if it were cut only a short time ago. Advantage was taken of the scaffolding made for cleaning the monument to climb to the metal cap, 555 ft above ihe yownd.
