AMENITIES’ SOCIETY
MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Amenities Society was held last evening, the following members being present:—Messrs Crosby Morris (in the chair), (I. Simpson, 0. 0. M'Xellar, A. C. Cameron, J. Wilson, H. i J . West, J. Ash, H. P. Aitkeu, J. C. Bcgg, Stuart Cameron, D. Tannock, Mrs Mackie Begg, and Dr Hercus. The Chairman extended a welcome to Mr Stuart Cameron, a new member of the committee. A discussion ensued on the question of whether the society should continue its activities in town planning work. On the motion of Dr Hercus, seconded by Mr A. C. Cameron, the following resolution was carried:—“That in the event of the. formation of a branch of the New Zealand Town Planning Institute or a body formed to further town planning in this city, this society agrees to delegate- its town planning activities to the new organisation. This suggestion has been reached because it is understood that a group of those interested in town planning is prepared to form a Dunedin committee, and it is realised that it is in the interests of this city that town planning be studied and that any necessary action for its prosecution be taken.” In connection with-the programme of work for the ensuing year it was resolved that on its tours of inspection the committee should visit the -following localities;—St. Clair, to consider general improvements and tree planting ; section corner of Harrow street and Anzac avenue, completion of scheme to put down flower plots and grass; reserves on each side of- the Early Settlers’ Hall; entrance to lower Peninsula road from Anderson’s Bay road; rubbish tips at top of Stafford street, at Anderson’s Bay, and at the Clear; Victoria Park, Market Reserve, tree planting; Cumberland street south from Rattray street; entrance to Logan Park; Education Board land north side of new Albany Street School; approaches to the city from the north and south and other spots where improvements could bo made. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Simpson (convener), Tannock, R. Fountain, and S. P. Cameron, was set up to report to a future meeting regarding improvements which it thought could be effected on the Town Belt. The same sub-committee was asked to report concerning the purchase of trees tor future planting and the renewal of trees which had died out. In connection with the comment concerning the Main, tip and the statement that the society should have taken action in the matter, it was pointed out that the society had made repeated protests to have it removed, but without success.
