MONTHLY MEETING The Taieri River Trust held its monthly meeting yesterday; present Messrs'!. M. Ball (chairman), S. Snell, C. Findlay, Jas. Dow, H. W. Wilson, J. Smith, F. Johnson, and W. J. Marshall. REPORTS. The foreman of works (Mr W. Munro) reported that the following work had been carried out during the monfhThe box had been repaired ,on the Henley-Berwick road. Seventy chains of Kirk’s drain had been deepened: The small break in the Contour Bank had been, blocked. The excavator had finished .through Lake. Repairs'to the Berwick bahk^had been carried out. Twenty-three chains of the main drain had been cleaned by the dragline.—Mr J. Marshall reported that his gang had deepened and widened ten chains of W. Beathe’s drain and 135 chains of Lee Creek. The broken pipe-line and the weir at Richard’s property had been repaired. The weir at Thompson’s had been concreted and repaired DEPUTATION. A deputation waited on the trust representing settlers neighbouring I-ee Creek, who asked that their water supply from Lee Creek be continued. Mr Beattie hi introducing the question stated that the settlers had understood that they would receive a water supply when certain works had been carried out. This supply the settlers had received through a 12-inch pipe up till the present. As a result of the majority of the ptpes being washed out during the recent rainfalls the supply would be cut off if the pipes were not reinstated. The chairman of the trust stated that the filling up which had been carried out was an emergency step. He assured the deputation that the trust had no desire to take away a privilege enjoyed by the settlers for several years. It was resolved that the Works Committee inspect and report to next meeting on the advisability of putting in a six-inch pipe. CORRESPONDENCE; The Public Works Department enclosed photos of plans of the pumping plant, received, the engineers to be instructed to carry out the work of repairing the pumps. The Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, wrote that the Government had decided to bring down legislation during the present session for the purpose of authorising local bodies to grant the same concessions as formerly with regard to the 10 per cent, penalty on rates for the year 1934-35. —Received. Mr D. Cameron, Berwick, wrote in connection with his lease of portion of the trust’s endowments and also _in regard to the matter of compensation for land cut up by the dragline.—The Works Committee to assess the damage done by the excavator and the new lease to bo given under the same terms as the other leases held by the trust except that the new lease under consideration be for a five-year period, A petition signed by fourteen settlers requested that Kirk’s drain be cleaned out. This work had already been started, the applicants to be advised accordingly. The manager of the Perpetual Trustees Company requested that a drain near a client’s property at Maungatna be cleaned out.—lt was decided to reply that the drain had previously been cleaned out by relief labour which was not now available.

The Superintendent of the State Advances Department, Wellington, notified that it was not prepared to accept liability for rates unpaid by an occupier of land owned by the department.—The trust’s solicitors to he instructed to sue for the 1933-35 rates from the State Advances Office.

Mr Peter G. Ford, Outraiu, asked for attention to be given to the road across the embankment near Momona.

Mr .T. H. Anderson, Outram, wrote in connection with the sale of sections at Outram,' offering a price for same.— Offer accepted. The Bruce County Council wrote asking if it were possible to hire the dragline excavator for work in the_ county. —The Bruce Council to be informed that the wet weather had prevented the trust’s work being carried out, but that the excavator would be available about May 1. The Assistant TJnder-Sccretary of the Public Works Department, Wellington,

forwarded a copy of an undertaking for dedicating the portion of land required to widen Kirk’s road, Taieri County. Rocsived* Messrs Cook, Lemon, and Cook, solicitors, requested that a remission of rates outstanding on a property be granted.—The trust could not agree to remit any portion of the rates. Mr John Marshall, sen., Outram, drew attention to leakage from the Contour Channel.— I The Works Committee reported that it had visited the locality and was satisfied with the present state of that part of the bank.—The writer to he thanked for .his letter, and the matter kept in view. GENERAL. The secretary reported that four men had been employed under the No. 5 subsidy scheme as outlined at last meeting. An application from a fifth man ■was accepted. . , W' It was resolved to place m the.hands 'of the solicitors ’’for collection all rates in arrears up to and including 1933. ' The secretary presented a rough estimate of the financial position for the year, a satisfactory position being revealed. A special account which had been opened some time ago for repayment of a loan was declared closed and paid into the general account. Four applications were received for a remission of the penalty cm rates not paid within the required date. —It was decided that the amount of penalty due over and above the amount the defaults had cost the trust in interest and other expense be remitted on payment of tho rates.
