ARTERIAL ROAD ACROSS THE SOUTH 'ISLAND. Cabinet - has approved of a 'grant 0 f £25,000 for the construction of the Lewis Ras-: road, linking Canterbury and West Coast, and providing the only arterial route across the South Island. Mr Forbes said that provision would be made in the main estimates next session, and the work would be carried out by the Public Works Department and the Public Works rates of pay. Plans were now being prepared for the several bridges involved in the construction, including one across the Hope River. It was honed to make a start with the work as soon as the plans were completed,—Press Association. LORD JELL 1 COE’S DAUGHTER. LONDON, March 31.—Lady Norah Jellicoo, a daughter of Lord Jellieocj was married to Captain Wingfield. Lady Gwendoline Jellieoe (whose engagement to Major Edward Latham was recently announced) was a bridesmaid. ■ COALITION AND GENERAL ELECTION. The question of maintaining the Coalition arrangement for the General Election was discussed at Cabinet meetings yesterday, and for over an hour before midnight Mr Forbes, Mr Coates, and Mr Masters were in close consultation. In addition an independent meeting of the Reform section of the Coalition was held by Mr Coates this morning. At this gathering the attitude of the Reform Leader in insisting upon the preservation of the party status quo was endorsed. It is reported that the statement which Mr Forbes will issue to-night on behalf of himself and Mr Coates will disclose that an agreement to maintain the present arrangement for the General Election has been arrived af.— Press Association. BROOK’S EX PERI ENCE. LONDON, March 31.—Brook was so deaf that he could not hear the cheers of the crowd. He said: “ I had to fight through a terrific gale between Athens and Route. I was not sure whether 1. was going to manage it. I was advised at Brindisi not to proceed, but I risked it. I crossed the Apennines in a snowstorm.” FACE AND CHEST SCALDED. Evelyn Koan</, single, aged* 34 years, was admitted to the hospital to-day suffering from scalds to her face and chest, received as a result of boiling water splashing out of a tub. She resides at 28 Forbes street. KNOCKED DOWN BY CYCLIST. Hanna Smellie, married, residing at Burkes, was knocked down by a cyclist at the corner of Stuart street and Moray place this afternoon.
