COMPENSATED VOLTAGE

Some 1934 models arc, provided with what is known as a compensated voltage control for the electric generator, and it is understood that a great number of 1935 productions will have that cquipnTent, which is different from the familiar “ third brush ” regulation, which only restricts the output to a predetermined limit, without regard to the electrical load and the state of charge of the battery. With the compensated control the output of the dynamo is regulated in such a wav that, for example, when the cells arc fully charged the lamps are not in use, and the only drain on the battery is to supply current to the ignition coil, the charging rate automatically falls off, so that the cells do not tend to become overcharged, but receive a “ trickle ’’ charge which suffices to keep them in good condition. The ammeter readings vary in consequence, and during daylight running the indicated charging rate may be only one or two amperes, a circumstance which is not indicative of a probable defect, as would be the case in respect of the “ third brush ” style of .regulation. A very desirable feautre of the new equipment is that it prevents tho sudden flaring up and fusing of all the lamps at night in the event of a battery connection becoming loose. The regulator consists of a vibrating armature, which is controlled by different windings, and interrupts the circuit periodically and at such a rate that the normal voltage at the dynamo terminals is more or less constant, irrespective of tho speed of the engine.
