SATURDAY’S CRICKET

CARISBROOK B'S FOUR-POINTER

Great enthusiasm prevailed at the North Ground on Saturday when Grange defeated Carisbrook A and thus annexed the championship honours in the senior competition for the 1931-35 season. ,

■ Xhe round of matches on Anniversary Day resulted in Carisbrook' A having a one-point lead over Grange, but on the previous Saturday Grange scored 348, which Carisbrook had to pass to hold its position. The Carisbrook side, however, failed dismally, despite favourable conditions, to get anywhere near the Orange total. For Carisbrook J. M'Mullan played a splendid fighting innings, and never looked like getting out. E. Cox and J. Cameron also made useful contributions to the total, but they did not revfeal the same confidence as M'Mullan. ■ Two-point wins were secured by Albion, Eaikorai, and the Colts, while Carisbrook B, after declaring with three wickets; to fall, gained a fourpoint win against Dunedin by the narrow margin of seven runs. _ Top score for the day was registered by the young Albion ’player, 0. Dalziel, who compiled Z 6 against H. 5.0.8. In the same match S, Duncan scored an attractive 46.

GRANGE'S EASY WIN CARIBIMIK A FOLLOWS BN ■ A large crowd witnessed the deciding match for the 1934-35 championship on the North Ground, when Grange snored an easy victory against Carisbrook A. On the first day of play Grange hoisted the big total of 348/ but Carisbrook could only collect 149 m reply, although an easy wicket favoured the batsmen. When - stumps were drawn Carisbrook bad 115 runs on for four wickets. Carisbrook made a disastrous start, four wickets falling for 16 runs. Grange howled Knight and Dey, and after 9 runs .had been scored there was a pro- - cession of batsmen to the pavilion. Chettleburgh threw Kerr’s wicket down when an impossible run was attempted, and Dunning was brilliantly caught by Knight, who dived forward ou his elbows to take the ball. In Dey’s next over'Williams stepped out to one and . missed, Chadwick smartly removing the bails. Only four runs were added to tb# score'when M‘Kay snicked one into ‘ th 1 ® slips and Galland took a good catch* At'this stage Knight had taken two wickets for 4 runs in his seventh over. Then M'Mullan and Cox became associated, a»d Carisbrook’s position improved considerably. The total being taken to 59 before Cox lifted one to -point in Gallahd’s second over. Galland continued to make frequent changes in the bowling, but M Mullan treated the attack with scant respect and continued to wait patiently for halls which he could play with perfect ■afety. He and J. Cameron were still together at the afternoon tea adjournment, and the partnership remained unbroken until 98 was reached, when Chettleburgh bowled M'Mullan off his pads, 3. Cameron brought the century up'by snicking Dey through the slips, but runs were coming very slowly, and defensive tactics were the order of the day. After J., Cameron’s dismissal Napier and H. Cameron went cheaply, but the two last men, Bottmg .and A. Kerr, put up a stubborn stand and hung on to keep Grange in the field until 5.16, when Kerr was caught by Knight off Dey. Carisbrook went in again, and when stumps were drawn »t 615 had H 5 on for the loss of four wickets, the principal contributor being Dunning, whose score, of 52 included four 6’s. BeUils: - grange. ■ Dunedin, which had lost nine wickets for 96. in its first innings against Carisbrook B, declared without further play, and sent Carisbrook B in again.' The early batsmen failed to get, going, and four wickets fell in the first hour. Geddes and E. W. Procter then became associated in a useful partnership, the former scoring 43 before he was run out. Proctor had 23 on when he was well held by Douglas off Claridge. A. C. Procter hit but freely, and put on 35 by the tea adjournment,, when the innings was declared closed with seven wickets down for 155. Noble was the most successful Dunedin bowler, taking three wickets for 22. Dunedin had over two hours to make 153 for a four-point win, and the opening batsmen, Ditchficld and Holley, made a good start. The former, however, was very slow in making his 13, numerous runs bieng lost through failure to run smartly between the wickets. Holley was more confident, and put on 25 before being clean bowled. Claridge played a delightfully forceful innings, making 55 in thirtyeight minutes.. He hit four 6’s, three m succession off Bell, and lost no opportunity to make runs. His partnership with Torrance (who scored 21) was worth 44 runs; Dunedin played with only nine men, and when the eighth wicket foil was only 7 ■ runs short of a four-point win, but the result was a four-point victory for Carisbrobk B. KAIKORAI BEAT UNIVERSITY A TWO-POINT VICTORY A well-earned two-point victory was gained by Kaikorai in the game with University, the hill team declaring its innings closed before play began, and dsmissing the students for 176, _ a feature of which was the forceful display provided by. L. Uttley. ’Varsity failed by two runs to avert the follow on; the innings lasted for 180 minutes, and stumps were drawn ten minutes after time. Cook, the medium-paced Kaikorai bowler, closed the season with_ 58 wickets to his credit. University’s opening batsman, K. Uttley, made a good 38, hitting one six and five fours. L. Uttley confidently knocked up 41, his total including seven fours. Henderson played well up to his usual form, and hit three sixes before ho was clean bowled by Cook. He was, however, dropped twice early in the innings. Following on, the students’ first three wickets fell cheaply, but L. Uttley and Ibbotson stopped what might have been a serious rot. The Former hit out, and compiled a useful 30, Vial was bowling efficiently throughout, especially in the second innings, when he took throe wickets for 24 runs. Details :

Albion had a lead of 99 runs when Old Boys began their strike, but an appeal against the light at 5.5, when four wickets were down for 41, was upheld. 7 . For Albion, Dalziel carried his score from 31 to 76 without giving a semblance of a chancel The wicket was easy and the bowlers never looked dangerous at any time. Dalziel scored most of his runs' behind the wicket, but he displayed an increasing variety of strokes in front of the wicket. He went Ibw in attempting his hook shot. Duncan continued his run of big scores by knocking together 46 in attractive fashion, scoring freely all round the wicket. Lattimer batted soundly for his score of 12.

Union gained a three-point win over School on a good wicket at the School grounds. The previous match day Union had made 186 runs in its first innings, and School had replied with 92 for the loss of five wickets at stumps. Tilbury and Blakely, the not-out batsmen, continued for School, but disaster came early when Tilbury was run out with 51 runs scored the previous day. Blakely and Uttley looked like making good stand, and these took the score to 102 before Blakely was bowled by Blair. Uttley and Liddell improved the total, which closed for 134. Uttley had 35 runs on and Liddell 9 not out. Maddigan secured the bowling figures, taking four wickets for 30 runs. Union’s second innings brought the score up quickly, Blair and Mahoney hitting up the runs in great style. Blair had 35 runs on when he was bowled by Tilbury, but Mahoney was undefeated with 50 runs. Union declared with five wickets clown for 109 runs, and School commenced its second strike rather disastrously. Capstick and Andrew went early, but Gowland batted solidly. Mee gave Robbie a catch after scoring a single, and three wickets were down for 14 runs. Blundell joined Gowland, and a lietter stand was made against the Union attack.
