GAME SHOOTING

SEASONS ANNOUNCED The 'N. Z. Gazette ’ of March 2J contains the notification of the various seasons declared for game shooting. Tim provisions -as regards the Otago Acclimatisation district are a season of three months (from May 1 to July 31) for Californian quail (which,may nob be taken or killed in the counties of Taieri, Waikouaiti, Waihomo, and Clutha), and a season of two months (from May 1 to June 30) for mallard, grey, and spoonbill ducks, and black swan (though these latter birds—black swan—may not be shot on or within fire chains of Lakes Hawea and Wanaka). A short open season of one week (May 1-7 inclusive) has been granted for paradise ducks. A close season this.year in all districts is being observed, for the pnkeko, and the native pigeon is absolutely protected. The bag limits have been fixed at twenty in al| for quail, mallard, grey, paradise, and spoonbill clucks, or twenty quail, or twelve mallards, or fifteen head in all of mallard, grey and spoonbill ducks, or five paradise ducks, or ten head of black swan (provided that in estimating the total head of game allowed to be taken by any one person in any one day, the number of black swan shall, not be taken into consideration) . ■ The regulation regarding the use of decoys has been altered this' year to provide that the fifteen artificial decoys which may again be used shall not. be spread over a greater area than 30yds square, and no person shall now place any artificial decoys within 100yds of the nearest of any other artificial decoys set out by any other person.
