LEADERSHIP IN A WOMEN'S MOVEMENT
The Y.W.C.A. offers scope to many women, both younger and older, for the exercise and' development of thenpowers of leadership in satisfying and constructive service to their fellow-members, as well as to the community. To begin at the bottom, as it were, girls trom fourteen and upwards find themselves presidents of small groups, members of committees in charge of organising parties, games nights, and so on, officers _of councils in various departments, the members of which learn to think and plan for the larger groups which they represent, counsellors of girl citizen groups find opportunity for working, as their loaders, with ypunger girls, while older women find their place on departmental committees which are responsible, in co-operation with staff members, to the board of directors for the management of such different departments as girls’ work, senior activities, health and recreation, house and caffeteria, world fellowship, membership,, hostels, and finance, respectively. Of the directorate itself, members themselves often say that the work becomes more fascinating with years of experience and with growing understanding of the implications of its purpose. The professional secretary naturally has perhaps one of the most compensating parts to play, since such full time service as she Is called upon to render is full of.variety, rich in friendship, and gives rise to many chances for development. It is gratifying to the Dunedin Association that Miss Meg Saunders, who haa for some years served the association as a leader of girl citizens, has been accepted for a secretarial appointment, and goes after a short course of training to the position of girls’ work secretary at Tinmru.
