SURF LIFE SAVING

TOMAHAWK CUP COMPETITION The first annual competition for the Tomahawk Cup was held yesterday afternoon at Tomahawk Beach, under the auspices of the Otago Surf Association. The weather was ideal for the occasion, and the surf, though rather on the cold side, was in good condition. A fair number of spectators viewed the competition from the beach and the surrounding sandhills, and special interest was displayed by the local residents (by whose efforts the cup was presented), and there is every possibility of a club being formed at Tomahawk in the immediate future. The contest was marred to a certain extent by the buoy coming adrift from its mooring and going out to sea, and considerable difficulty was experienced in putting out another. Owing to the heavy mooring having to to be taken out by hand, the buoy was consequently not as far out as could bo desired. Nevertheless the five competing teams, four from St. Clair and one from St. Kilda, all gave creditable performances, the final points being very close, with only 7 points between the first and last teams. '

St, Clair No. 1 and St. Clair No. 2 were both equal for, fastest time, St. Kilda being third only laec behind. The line work and general proficiency of all teams were very fair, the drill of St. Clair No. 1 being just a little smarter than the other teams. St. Kilda’s get-away was very fast, as was St. Clair No. I’s, and both these teams gained highest points in this section. The : placed teams, however, all lost points on resuscitation, the timing of the movements being too slow, this being particularly noticeable with both St. Clair No. 1 and St. Kilda. ■Results:— St. Clair No. I.—P. Mathieson (belt), J. M. Rodgerson (Hue), Hr D. Gillies (reel), C. B. Lewis (patient), 75 points ... 1 St. Clair No. 2.—R. Geddes (belt), ... C. Gladwiif (line),' J. Durand (reel), V. Aldous (patient),- 73 points ... 2 S£ Kilda.—J. Byrnes (belt), D. Newall (lino), A. Thomas (reel),’ V. Newall (patient), 68J points ... 3 Also started: St. Clair No. 4 points), and St. Clair No. 3 (66 points). The following officials controlled the contest;,—-Judges, Messrs H. H. Henderson arid W. A. Wood; timekeepers, Messrs E L. Macassey and T. Fogg; marshal, Mr J. Pereira.

On behalf of. tbe competitors the Otago Surf Association desires to thank Mr Pereira for providing dressing accommodation, and also those ladies who kindly assisted with the much-appre-ciated afternoon tea.
