COMPULSORY ARBITRATION
DEPUTATION UNSUCCESSFUL INQUIRY INTO WORKING HOURS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 28.; , The ‘ request, that the Government .should amend' the law so as7to provide for compulsory arbitration was made to the ~ Prime Minister to-day by a-deputation representative of the trades and labour councils of the dominion. •• The Government was also asked to consider the institution of a 40-hour week. Mr Forbes said he had previously stated that, is was. not the Government’s intention at present to amend the industrial laws. He, would investigate the request for a shorter working week, and also generally inquire into, the working ; of the Arbitration Act, particularly from- the' viewpoint' of sweated conditions of labour.
