JOTTINGS. Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting to bo held on March 16 and 18 close to-morrow at 8 p.m. Nominations for the Kurow meeting close to-morrow at 8 p.m. Eight yearlings by Fairway made 28,940gn5, an average of 3,561gn5, at the last English yearling sales. Nine by Blandford averaged 3,263gn5, A. E. Ellis, who is riding well just now, will be on Emissary, Moonbeam, Gas Mask, and Manetho at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday. Air Flow, who was nominated for tho Monowai Handicap to be run at Invercargill to-morrow, but did not accept, is an American-bred filly, owned by Mr J. R. MTvenzie. L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride Fracas, Imperial Spear, Wine, and Malvasia at tho Banks Peninsula Meeting, and G. H. Humphries will be on Some Shamble, Elloughton, Lady Nan, Gold Label, and Quebec. Mr W. E. Hazlett has purchased Signaller, and it is reported that a jumping career is in store for the big chestnut son of Balboa. The price is reported to have been £4OO, and at that ho should prove to be a cheap horse. Speakeasy, who won the Great Western Steeplechase at Riverton last Easter, is being prepared for another trip south this season. • With his trainer, A. S. Ellis, in tho saddle on Tuesday morning he jumped a round of the steeplechase fences at Riccarton in good style. The Smuggler has resumed work under A. M’Kenzie’s care at Invercargill after a lengthy spell, and an effort will be made to have him ready for the Riverton Cup. Last Easter The Smuggler was taken to Riccarton, and won the Great Autumn Handicap. That was Tho Smuggler’s last win. On June 20 m Sydney there will he a conference of trotting representatives of every State and from New Zealand to discuss a project for an annual carnival to be held in turn in the States and New Zealand. The idea of holding annual carnivals was suggested last year, and tho practicability of such a scheme will be discussed. If Vintage is the high-dass horse he is claimed to be he should collect expenses for his Australian trip in the Essendon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. A 14lb concession, on top of a 31b allowance as a gelding, gives him a rare opportunity, particularly as Peter Pan is not engaged. Donzelon, in taking the Harrington Handicap Steeplechase on January 8, was winning for the eighth time over the Leicester fences. He won the Quern Steeplechase on five occasions, in 1929, 1930, 1931, J. 933, and 1934. In all. Donzelon has won twenty-six ‘steeplechases, including the Scottish Grand National and the National Hunt Handicap Steeplechase. After Kellsboro’ Jack had won the Grand National Steeplechase a,t Aintree in 1938, his owner, the American, Mrs F. Ambrose Clark, said that he would not again be asked to tackle the National, and she has adhered to that decision. That Kellsboro’ Jack retains his form he-showed last month by winning the Star and Garter Steeplechase, three miles and 180yds, at Hurst Park. Ho heat a good field. Virtuous men are a menace to the State, in the opinion of a Parisian' newspaper. The virtuous man drinks no wine or spirits, and therefore contributes nothing to the tax on alcohol. He lives economically, and contributes little to the tax on business turnovers. He saves his monejt, thus avoiding all the taxes on money in circulation'. He does not bet, so the State receives none of his money through betting taxes. , He does not smoke, and so fans to support a State monopoly. He travels little, and thus increases tho railway deficit. Meyrick Good, writing after Golden Miller had won the Mapperley Steeplechase at Leicester on January 7. said: “ Miss Dorothy Paget’s great ’chaser appears to me to be fully two stone heavier than he was at this time twelve monthe ago. There is more substance about his middle, and his quarters are appreciably fuller. This tends to give him a more handsome appearance. Altogether, ‘ The Miller _ is as fine a ’chaser as one could wish to see. He has a handsome head and beautifully placed shoulders. In action ho possesses a wonderfully powerful hind stroke, getting his hocks well under him in galloping and jumping.” A courageous piece of riding over the last furlong was rewarded with success when Grand Blow won the Hopelands High Weight Handicap at Woodville on Saturday (writes “ Rangatira ”). Grand Blow was at the rear till half a mile from home, but several horses then began to stop, and he had gone up to be following Royal Papa and Boudoir as they came to the straight. P. Burgess kept to the fence and his way was blocked till near the distance, but then Royal Papa moved out a little and Burgess drove into the narrow passage, forcing his way through and going on to score by three-quarters of a length. It was a risk that many horsemen might not have taken. At the Leicester meeting Tuppence, who cost Miss Dorothy Paget 6,600gn5, won £3 by finishing third in a hurdle race. Buland Dar, who cost the Aga Khan 3,ooogns as a yearling, did not run at two years, ran twice unplaced at three, ran fourteen times at four years for two wins and a dead heat, one of his successes being in a selling race in a field of twenty-two, after which he was bought in for 340gns. He was twice unplaced at_ five years and was then relegated to jumping events, running six times unplaced at six years old. In December he won a selling hurdle race at £9O at Windsor. Gay Blonde, who beat Synagogue in the Great Northern Derby, had a week earlier won the Railway Handicap over six furlongs. She registered a similar effort, though in less pretentious company, at Te Aroha, scoring in the six furlongs race on Saturday and at a mile and a-qnarter on Monday. Gay Blonde is a sister to tho two-yeaf-okl Gay Sheik, who also was a winner at Te'Aroha and to Gny Sheila, who won last season’s Guineas at Auckland. Gay Sheila has not raced this season owing to meeting with an accident, but she is again in light work. The three fillies are all by Gay Shield from Lady Marie, by Romeo from the imported mare Marie Odile, by St. Amant.
