FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING Tbe City Council met last uigbt, those present being the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox), Crs W. Begg, W. H. Shepherd, J. L. MTndoe, J. J. Marlow, M. Silverstono, A. H. Allen, W, H. Borrie, W. A. Scott, and J. B. Shacklock. LIBRARY COMMITTEE. Cr Borrie having moved tho adoption of the report of tho Library Committee, Cr MTndoe said he "had just , had the pleasure of meeting Mr Dunniugham, the librarian, who had just returned from a tour of America, England, and Scotland. No doubt tho library would benefit greatly as a result of his experience abroad. . Cr Silverstono suggested that the committee might give consideration to the advisability of increasing the number of tickets issued for the lending department to each family. He had been told that two tickets a family were not enough for large families. He thought the restriction should bo removed and tho number increased. Cr Borrie, in reply, said tho restriction had been imposed on account of the great demand for books. The report was adopted. WORK IN RESERVES. Moving the adoption of the Reserves Committee’s report. Cr Shepherd referred to a clause dealing with tho representations by a deputation of relief workers regarding the class of work provided in the reserves. “ In respect to certain work some of tho statements made were substantially correct,” stated Cr Shepherd, “ but the committee is faced with the difficulty of finding light work for men who are sent to the reserves department and who are net fit for heavy work. It simply means that unless we can put these men oh light work there will be no work for them to do. This would bo unfortunate, and certainly contrary to the policy of the department.” The report was adopted. DEEP CREEK ACTIVTIES. A clause in the report of the Water Oommitee which drew some comment from the chairman (Cr Begg) was that which dealt with the request from a deputation of relief workers that the Deep Creek works should he speeded up. Cr Begg said that when he read the report or the committee in *the ‘ Evening Star ’ he was surprised to see that One of the headings put up over it was ‘ Speeding Up Not Favoured.’ He regretted very much that such a meaning had been taken out of the report, and he denied that that meaning could be read out of it. As a matter of fact, the committee as a whole was unanimous in its desire to speed up the work, and as far as possible everything in that direction was being done. The report was .adopted. TENDER ACCEPTED. Tho tender of Eastgate and Co. of 16s 3Jd a pipe, c.i.f. and e. Dunedin, was accepted for the supply and delivery of twenty-five torts of 4in cast iron spun pipes for the gas department.
