1935 BOAT RACE WILL BE BATTLE »F STYLES This year’s boat race between the Oxford and Cambridge Universities on Saturday, March 16, will be more than an inter-’varsity contest, as it will be a battle of the orthodox methods and the Fairbairn style. The rowing critics on the Thames consider that the orthodox coach teaches more for the individual oarsman, while the Fairbairn ideas are for the crew as a whole. Practically all the Cambridge College crews are now' adopting Pairbairnism. Cambridge this year is being coached by Mr Archie Nesbet (Pembroke), which is the home of Pairbairnism; while the Oxford is being coached by Messrs. Peter Hay-Thomas, K. Payne, and F. J. 0. Escombe—three old Cambridge blues. The light blues are using swivel rowdocks for the first time, and Oxford will row' in the orthodox method, using fixed pins. Both crew’s last year had three boats built for the race before they decided on the one they raced in. This year they’ have already ordered two. The first of the Oxford boats which was delivered in January was designed to seat a crew of the average weight of 13st. 41b. a record for a university crew' since the war, w’hile Cambridge is expected to average about 12&st.
