JOTTINGS. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the Cromwell Meeting close to-pi° rr ow. evening at 8 o’clock. The heavy rain experienced at Wingatui yesterday morning freshened up the grass, but was not sufficient to soften the_ tracks. Neither C. Gieseler nor F. Shaw 7 had' anything engaged at Gore yesterday, a most unusual thing for these two trainers. Messrs L. G. Hill and A. L. Canter, representing the Dunedin Jockey Club, were amongst the visitors at the Gore Meeting. Impala, a half-sister to Palantua, by Last Dart, showed she inherited the family speed by the good race she ran in the Summer Hack Handicap. L. J. Ellis was unable to add to his list of winning rides yesterday at Gore. A second on Rowlands was the nearest he got to a winning ride. From a good line with the judge at Gore it looked as if Broken Rule just failed to reach Dressy at the finish of the first race, but the judge decided in the former’s favour. Last Link had a rough passage over the last half of the journey in the Racing Club Handicap yesterday, and was knocked hack twice. Blue Spark was backed from the right quarter in the Electric Trot yesterday. He was a little slow to get away, but disappointed mostly by stopping badly over the last two furlongs. The barrier at the six furlong post at Gore was not working well, and in the first two races started ower this distance the horses standing near the outside appeared to get the worst of the despatches. There was a quiet chat on the course for Totolomai in the Racing Club Handicap. This mare has not been racing well this season, but looked well yesterday. Two furlongs from home she was going like a winner, but then began to drift, and finished just out of a place. Gold Salute let his party down badly in the Progressive Trot yesterday afternoon. He was always well placed, being never further back than third until turning for home, when he moved up into second place. Then lie failed when called on for a final effort, and could not do better than finish sixth. Royal Drive, winner of the Electric Trot yesterday, is a pretty useful sort and should be worth following during the nest few weeks. He got into a bit of a mix-up at the start and lost fully

48yds, and had to improve oil his assessment by nearly 14sec to win. When Thornton won the High-weight Handicap at Gore she scored her first winning bracket this season. A. E. Ellis allowed this mare to become well balanced before he let her go, and three furlongs from home she had the race in hand. This mare gave A. E. Ellis his only winning ride during tjie day. Gold Fox put up a good performance to win the Novice Handicap yesterday, as he was badly placed over the early stages. He put in a great finishing run from the home turn, and looks like developing, into a useful sprinter. He is by Paper Money from Artistic, and carries'Mr A. .1. Barton’s livery. Considering the two good races she ran at Tapauui a fortnight earlier, Dame Fortune had no right to be neglected in the betting on the Progressive Trot as was the case yesterday. Like Royal Drive, winner of the other light harness race on the card, Dame Fortune is trained by E. Todd at Wyndham. It will not be long before Bay Biddy wins a race. In the Longford Handicap yesterday she got chopped out at the start and lost a lot of ground. Prom the turn for home she travelled very fast, and • had the race been run over seven instead of six furlongs she would have seriously troubled the winner. Venite has recently been racing in mile races and carrying big imposts. With only 7st on her back yesterday she was always out in. front in the Racing Club Handicap, and galloping more generously _ than usual gave nothing a chance with her. She gave her apprentice rider, J. Taylor, his first winning ride, and he handled her well. Galleon, with L. J. Ellis, who also rode him at Wairio, where he won last month in • the saddle, was backed as if he were a “ racecourse certainty ” for the Summer Hack Handicap at Gore. He is a long-striding galloper, and the turns on the Gore course may have troubled him. Once straightened for home he galloped well, but had no chance of catching Mayam. Steeton had the services of A. E. Ellis in the Racing Club Handicap yesterday, and at the distance post was going so well that it looked as if she might catch Venite, but over the last furlong she stopped badly and Signaller got up to beat her for second place. The latter showed much better form than he did at Wingatui last week and carried his 9st well. Moneygran, who raced in Mr A. Ferguson’s colours at Gore, prefers to have matters over the early stages of his races made easier for him than was the case yesterday. When M‘Nab jumped out to the front Moneygran was never able to head him off, and the pair ran themselves into the ground, making it very easy for Final Bell over the last furlong. Punters received several body blows at Gore, but the one that must have hurt most was when Grecian Prince and Cherry Queen finished second last and last in the Croydon Handicap. Between them they carried well over half the pool invested on the win machine, and the only excuse that can be found for them was that they were not good enough. Each _ had every chance. It was surprising to see Enwood return such a good dividend in the open six furlong race yesterday, after her winning performance at Wyndham on New Year’s Day. Give this mare a bard firm track and she can always be relied on to run a smart six furlongs. She certainly had no right to return nearly such a good dividend after finishing fifth in the Publicans’ Handicap last week. Though looking much brighter than when he paraded for the Dunedin Cup last week. Osculate moved attractively in his preliminary for the Racing Club Handicap yesterday, and meeting most of the opposition on better terms than lie had beaten them at at Wingatui was sent out a short priced favourite. He made a forward move three furlongs from home, hut the effort was a short lived one, and the solid race he had in the Dunedin Cup evidently got to the bottom of him.
