SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS
BIG MEMBERSHIP INCREASE ANNUAL CONFERENCE [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 20. In moving the adoption of the aa< nual report, the president of the New, Zealand Society of Accountants, Mr H. Valentine, stated at the annual meeting that during the year the membership of the society had increased to 2,319, or by 415 members, and was now, higher than at any previous time. The fact that dose on 200 students were now qualifying annually for admission to the society was sufficient answer to the criticism that, by setting unduly high standards in its examinations, the society was endeavouring to create » close corporation. Five of the six retiring district members of the council were re-elected unopposed. These were: Hawke’s Bay, Mr M. S. Spence; Wellington, Mr S. E Lambert; Canterbury, Mr W. A. Smith; Otago, Mr J. W. Smeaton; Southland, Mr J. B. Reid. An election in the Auckland district resulted in the return of Mr J. M. Elliffe.
