Mr John O'Shea, of Wellington, who has been revisiting Dunedin, left this morning, intending to call at Timaru on his way home. . Mr G. E. Knowles, chairman of the Timaru Horticultural Society, went home to-day by the 11.35 train. Mr R. T. Stewart left for the West Coast this morning. Mr A. .. C. Mitchell returned to Christchurch by train to-day. Miss Viola Brown, who came to Dunedin for her father’s funeral, went back to Christchurch by train to-day. Chief-detective Young went north on duty this morning. . Mr F. L. Anderson and his wife and family, after spending a holiday with Dunedin relatives, left for their homo at Petono this morning. Mr Robert T. Pratt left by th« south express this morning to join the Maheno, en route for Melbourne, where he will in future reside. Mr J. Spiro, of Ford Motors Ltd. (Dunedin), has returned from tho north. Mr Ernest Davis has been selected by the Citizens’ Committee as its candidate to contest the Auckland city mayoralty at the municipal elections on May 1. Captain C. S. Thomson, R.N., who was relieved in August as the second naval member of the New Zealand Navy Board, has been selected as the first commanding officer of the new cruiser Ajax, now fitting out at Barrow. The Ajax is to replace the York in the South American division. Mr W. Gray, M.A., B.Sc., formerly of Dunedin, and now principal of the Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Melbourne, and Mrs Gray, who have been renewing acquaintance with this part of the dominion, left by the south train this morning to join the Maheno at Bluff on their return journey to Melbourne. At the conclusion of tho Royal tour the New Zealand Government officials who accompanied the Duke of Gloucester throughout the dominion were personally and individually thanked by His Royal Highness for the care and attention they had given to the arrangements for the tour. Among the members of the party so honoured were the six New Zealand detectives attached to the Royal party, and His Royal Highness was pleased to give each of them a memento of his visit, a gift that indicated his appreciation of their services. Detective James Gibson, of Dunedin, received from tho Duke a striking silver pencil, engraved with the Royal arms, and it is a token that ho will naturally treasure. His Royal Highness, in a delightfully informal chat with the detectives, showed the keenest interest in their work, and expressed to each one of them his best wishes for their future success.

Mr W. Robert Moore, a writer for the ‘ National Geographic Magazine,’ is at present in Dunedin in the course of a six months’ tour of Australia and New Zealand, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr Moore’s intention is to write a series of articles on New Zealand, and these will be published. in_ the magazine in due. course along with many photographs—some in colour. Since his arrival in Dunedin on Monday Mr Moore has been in communication with the Tourist Department, the Otago Expansion League, and the Chamber of Commerce. He will leave for the southern lakes district in a few days. Mr R. A. Farquharson, M.A. (Oxon.), M.Sc., P.G.S. (London), a distinguished graduate of Otago University and one of the early Rhodes Scholars, has for some years past been, in charge of the geological and agricultural development of British Somaliland. Recently ha prepared plans for a large water-boring scheme for the protectorate, the execution of which, will occupy about three years, and these plans have been accepted by the Colonial Office. Some time ago Mr Farquharson visited Trinidad to investigate problems connected with tropical agriculture, and he has since been putting into practice the results of his observation for the further development of the country. After nine years’ service as manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of Australasia, Mr A. Vere Winchester will retire on March 2. He will be succeeded by Mr A. H. M. Maning, who is at present manager of the Hamilton branch of the bank. Mr Winchester was born in Dunedin, and joined the bank here. Before going_ to Christchurch he was manager or acting manager at the branches at LevinTimaru, Dunedin, and Whangarei.
