AUCKLAND CRICKET

CONGRATULATIONS TO CANTERBURY

[Special to the ‘ Star.’]

AL'CKLAND, January 23

At last night’s meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association it was agreed to send a letter of congratulation to the Canterbury Association on its success in the Plnuket Shield competition. The treasurer (Mr J. H. Watts) advised that the takings for the AucklandWellington Plunket Shield match had totalled £195, the lowest figure on record. He made the suggestion that the, poor receipts could bo explained to a certain extent by the fact that the game had no competitive interest in so far as it affected the Plunket Shield; also, he considered that the heat wave experienced during the course of the game deterred many of the public from attending. The gate charge was Is 6d instead of Is in former years. A letter received from Canterbury expressed regret that it, could not arrange for a suitable side to visit Auckland for the suggested friendly fixture in February, as only two members of its Plunket Shield side would have been available for the match.
