Fracas finished much the better, while Aiguille came from the rear for third. NOTES OH THE RAGING I fSpECUT. TO THE ' STAR.'] A CHOKEBORE SUCCESS. The Ark and Knockout had a close tussle for favouritism in the Trentham High-weight Handicap, and they took part in an interesting finish. The early leaders were The Ark, Knockout, Round Score, Wino, and Umpire. The Ark was still in front rounding the home turn and into the straight from Palatinate, Wino, Hot Stuff, and Round Score. The last-named had The Ark beaten inside the distance, and Knockout then put in her claim. Confidently ridden she wore down Round Score to beat him by n long head. The Ark was a close third, a length in front of Dombey, with Palatinate, Wino, Purse, and Haere Tonu next. JUVENILES BEATEN. Bun Fight was a slightly better favoruite than Variant for the Wellington Stakes, from which Galilee was a late withdrawal owing to soreness. Neither, however, took part in the finish. Limulus was the first to show out, and was never headed. She led on to the course proper from Pakanui, Emissary, Burnish, Mother Superior, and Bun Fight. Emissary made a solid effort to overhaul the leader, but failed in the last few strides, and Mother Superior challenged with a late run. Limuhis was stopping badly, but was able to hold her advantage to win by a neck from Mother Superior, with a similar margin to Emissary. Variant was a moderate fourth in front of Burnish, Penelope, and Bun Fight. APPRENTICES' PLATE. Fersen, the favourite for the Apprentices' Plate, was last to move off and tailed the field for half the journey and then finished with a burst of speed into third place. He would, however, have had his work cut out to beat Palm, who streaked away shortly after the start, and had a useful lead entering the straight from Capital, Jubilee Song, Tupurangi, Hunting Bag, and Horotiu. Palm was not at all troubled in the run home to win easily from Hunting Bag, who held on long enough to beat Fersen. Jubilee Song was close up next, and was followed by Tupurangi, Heather Glow, and Capital. A SPEEDY YOUNGSTER. Fulojoy had a comfortable task in the Fitzherbert Handicap. She was one of the early leaders, Corroboree and Heritage being tailed off over the first two furlongs. Nightlass was actually the first on to the course proper, wide out, but Fulojoy, on the rails, was in front after passing the distance, and although Nightlass got up to less than a length at the post the winner could have had a bigger margin if her rider had ridden her out. Alchemic was a fair third and Kotou was a good fourth, while Heritage and Corroboree, both finishing determinedly from a long way back, were close up next. VINTAGE'S GREAT EFFORT. Vintage was sent out a much better favourite than Grand Jury for the Wellington Cup, and his large array of supporters had no cause for worry once he moved up to the leaders commencing the run home. When the field settled down Red Manfred had charge from Spiral, Grand Jury, Rocket, and Vintage. Entering the back Red Manfred had charge from Grand Jury, Spiral, Rocket, Vintage, Silver Sight, Red Sun, Tout ]e Monde, and Cuddle. Passing the five furlong post Cuddle moved up into second place, and followed Red Manfred to the home turn, where she went to the front and was well clear of Red Manfred entering the straight, wrbh Spiral and Vintage handy. The last-named gradually crept up on the outside and was on terms with Cuddle at the distance post. The latter stuck to her task well and came again after apparently being well beaten, but Vintage never looked like being beaten and he won in a convincing manner by two lengths from CudlJlc, who was nearly double that distance in front of Spiral. Red Manfred was two lengths away in front of Silver Sight, Gay Marigold, Tout le Monde, Rocket, Red Sun, and Grand Jury. The winner established a weightcarrying record in the Cup, the previous highest impost being carried by Star Stranger in 1928. His time was the second best in the history of the race, the best being 2min 29sec, which was a New Zealand and Australian record credited to Compris in 1932. FAVOURITES BEATEN. Friesland and Tunneller were in most demand for the Ruapehu Handicap, but neither made a return. • The latter made a promising effort inside the distance, but got blocked, and lost' what looked like a good chance. Cup Bearer acted as pacemaker from the start, and led on to the course proper from Beau Gallante, Invoice, Epris. and Brown Betty, with Moonbeam close up on the rails. In an exciting finish Beau Gallante stayed on best to beat Epris by a neck, with State Bank a similar distance away next in front of Moonbeam. Tunneller, Brown Betty, Travenna, Invoice, Colossian, and Friesland followed in that order. WHERIKO'S FAST FINISH. The contest for the Telegraph Handicap was affected to a large extent by some bumping, which took place passing the distance amongst the leaders— Namakia, Princess Doreen, Diatomous, and Lucidus—and the final tussle was loft to three horses that were well back entering upon the course proper. Of these Autopay looked a likely winner a few chains from the post, but Wheriko, who was in last place with a furlong to go, finished with a dazzling run, and got up to beat Autopay by a length. Silver Streak battled on into I

third place in front of Lucidus, with Star Artist, Guarantee, and Namakia close together next. Princess Doreen and Diatomous appeared to be the worst sufferers from the trouble which occurred in the straight. ANOTHER FOR CHOKEBORE. The concluding event was an easy proposition for , the second choice, Fracas, who buried the opposition in the last furlong. Cardinal Moon, Cyclonic, and Great Star raced abreast to the straight entrance, with Fracas and Cherry King in close attendance. Fracas moved up as soon as the run home was entered upon, and from that stage had the race m hand, going on to win without pressure from the favourite, Cherry King, who put in some telling work over the concluding stages. Aiguille was a fair third, with 1 Cyclonic and Kemal Pasha and Some Shamble next.
