SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
OTAGO’S CHANGE FOR SHIELD ROSY THIS MORNING'S EVENTS [From Our Own Reporter.] TIMARU, January 22. With one exception, all .the Otago swimmers competing in the heats of the New Zealand Intermediate and Junior Championships in bright sunshine this morning qualified for the finals tonight, and Otago’s chances of lifting the shield are very rosy. The first heat in' the 220 Yards Intermediate for boys resolved itself into a tussle between A. Pascoe '(Auckland) and D. O’Neill (Wellington). Though at 50yds, done in 29 2-ssec,' R. Rimnler (Canterbury) led, Pascoe and O’Neill forged ahead, Pascoe spurting over the last twenty yards to win by two yards from O’Neill in 2min 43 3-ssec, Rimmer a similar distance back, third. Syd. Jarvis (Otago) ambled along in the second heat, leading all the way to win comfortably by two yards in 2min 46 2-ssec, with H. Goldsmith (Auckland) second, and H. Pateman(South Canterbury), four yards back, third. Jarvis finished with plenty in reserve, and should register fast time to-night. The time for the 50yds was 31 3-ssec, and for the 100yds 69 2-ssec. The third heat was a slow-swum race, the first 100yds in 73sec, D. Webster (Auckland) leading by half a yard from R. Hatchwell (Canterbury), and J. Parry (Otago). Barry swam a welljudged'race for second, coming up fast over the last bit, Webster winning by half a yard, with Hatchwell a similar distance back; third. Time, 2miu 50 4-ssec.
The title-holder, Miss R. Low, won the first heat of the 75 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Breast Stroke in an exciting finish from Miss 0. Smith (Wellington) by a touch, in 67sec, Miss P. Broad (Manawatu) a. similar distance back. The time for the first 50yds was 43sec.
Miss N. Olds (Otago) had plenty in hand in the second heat, and after leading over the first 50yds in 41sec. won nicely by a yard from Miss C. Lynch (Southland) in 66 l-osec, Miss. Fry, (Canterbury) a touch back, third. Miss 0. Buckland (Otago) was some distance back, and Miss A. Gillies (Otago) was unable to start.
The first heat of the 50 Yards Junior (Girls) resulted in a win for Miss B. Graham (Canterbury) in 33 2-ssec, by three # yards, Miss R. Jarvis (Otago) finishing well to edge Miss McDonald (Southland) out of second place. In the second heat Miss J. Thomson (Otago) was drawn against two sturdy Aucklanders, Misses J. Melhose and G. Priestley, and swam a good race. Miss Melhose won by two yards in 32sec, Miss Thomson three yards behind.. The Otago girl’s time was 35sec. Misses Jarvis and Thomson both qualified.
