TORRENTIAL RAIN
DAMAGE IN CROMWELL BODGE HALF IHCH IN HALF AN MBR Half an hour’s torrential rain in th« Cromwell Gorge yesterday afternoon, swept' debris down the hillside on to the highway and the railway line, washing out sections of the. road and rail. The thunderstorm burst over the district at 4 o’clock, and, though the heavy rain was general, the damage was confined to a half-mile section of the gorge, three miles ; above Clyde. Within half an hour 46 points of rain fell there. This spot appears to_ have a yearly visitation, usually destructive, of a thunderstorm or cloudburst. The road and rail were blocked fop a time yesterday by the debris, but the county engineer (Mr George) soon had a gang at work. The clearing work was continued this morning, when traffic was able to pass through the gorge, but motorists will be required to exercise caution for the next twq days over .the section, A,A. (Otago) was advised this morning.
