SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY Reference to the splendid' service that has been performed by the Dunedin Citizens’ Day Nurseries in alleviating the distress caused by the economic conditions was made by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. J. Marlow in declaring open the garden party held by the Ladies’ Committee at the residence of Mr and Mrs Arthur D. Hudson, Alton avenue, Musselburgh rise, on Saturday afternoon. Citizens, he said, greatly appreciated what the women were doing m connection with the nursery. Young women were especially grateful, especially those who, owing to circumstances, had to work to supplement the earnings of their husbands, and who were able to leave their children in absolute safety at the nursery. On behalf of the citizens, he tendered sincere thanks to the women of the nursery for their work, lie also thanked Sir and Mrs Hudson for placing their beautiful, grounds at the disposal of the committee, and, in conclusion, he expressed the hope that those present would tender sufficient support to ’encourage the or ganisers. Warm weather helped to make the paVty a success, a large crowd gathering in the attractive grounds. Business was good, and a satisfactory sum nf money was realised. Members of the Ladies’ Committee served on the stalls, which included produce and cake, whilst there was_ also a series of competitive games, which proved popular with the visitors. Afternoon tea was served, and during the afternoon appropriate music for the occasion was supplied by the Boys’ Brigade Band.
