UNEMPLOYMENT

CONCERT AT ST. KILDA There was a good attendance at the entertainment held in the Coronation Hall, St. Kilda. last evening in aid of the Christmas cheer party for the children of the unemployed of the borough. A good programme was presented, the following contributing:—Mr Des. E. Neilson’s Banjo Band (current pojjular music) ; a quartette from the band in popular numbers; elocutionary items by Miss Winnie Dowie, Miss Beverley Gibbs, and Miss Iris Proctor; pianoforte solo, Mr J. G. Kersley; vocal solo, Mrs K. Chetwyn; trombone solo, Mr J. Marshall; vocal solos, Mr Tom Dillon; vocal solo, Mrs O’Connor. Cr M. Kelly was the chairman, and he called for a vote of thanks to the performers and to the accompanist (Mr J. G. Kersley), which was heartily given. He announced a programme of some twenty items by a concert party (organised by G. Mears and J. T. Ramsay) for to-night in the Coronation' Hall. The proceeds were to provide Christmas, gifts for the children of the unemployed of St. Kilda, and as the admission was small he anticipated a big audience would be present. On Sunday next a selected group from the Stella Musicale would provide the entire programme. 1 special request Signor Stella would sing some Spanish and Neapolitan folk songs, and Signora Stella would be the musical directress. The usual meeting under the auspices of Die National Unemployed Workers Movement was held at the Museum Ground yesterday, when Mr Norman Lee presided over a fair, attendance. The following speakers delivered addresses, which were attentively listened to by all. Mr C. M'Arthur (who criticised the actions of the British Government during the Great War), Mr S. Ikin (who spoke on the need for working class organisation), Mr M. O’Rorke (who dwelt on the necessity for a strong Communist party to show the workers the way out), arid Mr A. B. Powell, who criticised the capitalist Press. The chairman proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the speakers, which was carried by acclamation.
