SWIMMING

‘ STAR '-POLICE CARNIVAL The third animal * Star ’-Police carnival, staged at tho Municipal Baths last night under tho auspices of the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club, was the most successful one yet held, there being a large attendance of spectators. Competition was keener, and some of the. events were very closely contested. The two big events of the evening were tho 133 l-3yds relay and the water polo match. The 1 Star •' team won the former, and the water polo match ended in a draw, each side scoring 2 goals. The programme included a number of special demonstrations by members of the Kiwi Club, and these were much appreciated by those present. Three “ improvers,” Teddy Jenvey, Misses Joan and Jean Jenvey, gave a, display of breast stroke, which was followed by a more advanced exhibition by Michael Shanahan, the New Zealand junior boys’ champion, and Miss Maureen Shanahan, and the youngest member of the Shanahan family, John, gave a demonstration of crawl. A most entertaining novelty was staged by the ladies’ captain of the Kiwi Club, Miss M. Boulton, and Dan Shanahan, the New Zealand intermediate boys’ breast stroke champion, their sketch being entitled ‘ Modern Swimming,’ though their costumes suggested anything but that. \

Reg. Gcddes, club captain of the Kiwi Club, proved a host in himself. He gave a good exhibition of diving, which was followed by a demonstration of breast stroke, and’ subsequently he and D. Pickard gave a life-saving display. The swimming demonstrations, were arranged by Miss Boulton. The carnival was opened by Inspector Shanahan, who expressed the pleasure of all at being afforded the opportunity of taking part, and thanked tbe Kiwi Club for again arranging the gathering. The swimming judges were Messrs S. Brown (president of .the Kiwi Club), Mr C. G. Smith, and Inspector Shanahan: Messrs W. A. Jenkins (president of' the Otago Swimming Centre), S. •Brown, and A. Findlay judged the diving; Messrs A. Thomas and A. J. Leeden were the timekeepers; Mr W. A. Jenkins starter; Messrs Reg. Geddes and A, Thomas announcers; Mr Reg. Geddes result steward; Mr C. J. Leeden competitors’ steward; and Mr D. C. Bannatyne referee of the polo. .Results:—
