TEXTILE STRIKE
STILL NOT SETTLED LOCKOUT IN SOUTHERN STATES Tress Association —By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, September 24. Despite the official termination of the textile strike, peace has not returned to that industry. Reports from southern States indicate a vast lockout, in which at least 80,000 mill operatives were turned back when they tried to report for work. Some mills were said to he temporarily closed for the purpose of reconditioning the machinery, but others frankly said they must go through a rehiring process, apparently to weed out union members, while in some cases it was merely stated that the jobs had been filled. It has been revealed that the employers’ organisation has not formally accepted the non-discrimination clause of the President’s settlement, although the Labour Department is urging them to do so in order to prevent a possible recall of the strike.
