YACHTING AND BOATING

OTAGO CLUB S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club was held last evening, the commodore (Mr C. W. Sundstriini) being in the chair.; The annual report stated that j the club was still faced with the difficulties of the times through which they "were passing, but it was pleasing to note that it had held its own. The syllabus for the season was a short one, as it was felt that, with fewer races to concentrate on, better entries and racing would result. The haudicappers and the members of the Sailing Committee had put in a good deal of time in the interests of racing, hut the response of tho owners was a poor one. If the boat owners did not want racing the committee would like to know, hut if they did the club could/arrange for races. The thanks of the . club were due .to the donors of prizes. The club’s official opening day had been, held at Vauxhall, in. conjunction with other clubs in the harbour. Most of the work under the heading of club improvements had been of a maintenance nature, and Lad been kept down to the necessary minimum. The thanks of the club wore also due to the haudicappers, the Sailing and Slip Committees, the Harbour Board, the caretaker (Air C. .1. Nelson), the retiring delegates to the association, Messrs A. W. Hazelwood and .1. Smail, and to the honorary auditor (Mr B. E. Nces). The balance-sheet showed that the club had a hank balance of £65 18s 2d, compared with an opening balance of £77 0s Id. 'This was extremely satisfactory. In the income and expenditure account there was a profit of £2 0s 6d. Due allowance had been made for bad and doubtful subscriptions and lees, and all amounts unrecoverable had been written .off. The club’s finances were in a very healthy state, but it had to bo remembered that they might have to face a heavy season in respect of repairs and maintenance. The past season had really been very quiet, said the Commodore in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, and tho interest had not been sustained to such an extent as in previous years. The committee would like to see the hoys take more interest in tho races. There were one or two bright lights showing on tho horizon. For instance, members would have the opportunity of seeing Admiral Byrd’s Mathews cruiser, which, lie understood, was 46ft long. She would he moored in the harbour in the course of a week or two. The club had conic out on the right side so far as finances were concerned. He also expressed appreciation of the work done by some of the officers during the year. He referred to the proposal to erect steel works, and mentioned that, should it he necessary to shift the boat harbour to make room for the works, the club, he had been assured, would not lose by the move. Seconding the motion, Mr A. W, Hazelwood also said that the motor boat racing last year was very disappointing, but the yachting was very good. It appeared that in .the coming year there would be some good competitions in the 14-footer section. All would regret that the commodore was giving up the office. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
