AN EVENTFUL VOYAGE. The most interesting event in tho voyage of the Swedish four-masted barque Abraham Rydberg from Australia to Falmouth occurred when she was overtaken by the Canard liner .-Mauretania, when nearing the British coast. The liner altered her course to give the barque a greeting. Ensigns were dipped, and "the Mauretania’s passengers cheered. For some time the Abraham Rydberg; with all sail spread, kept up with the liner, hut gradually the Mauretania went ahead. When tbe barque was at the Equator twenty-one sharks were caught on hooks baited with pork, and the.backbones were made into walking sticks. South of tho Azores the ship, while carrying full sail, was overwhelmed by a terrific rainstorm, which, although lasting only a few minutes, resulted in the royal and topgallant yards on the foremast and six sails being carried away. A narrow escape from collision with a tug which was towing a ship was experienced when the Abraham Rydberg was off the Lizard. The vessels passed within 200yds of each other. The best day’s run of the 13,000 miles covered was 242 miles when off the South African coast. The Abraham Rydberg, which carries fifty cadets on board, is owned by Roden A/B Sumian, Stockholm, and was built by Messrs Charles Connell and Co. at Glasgow in 1892 as the Hawaiian l Isles.
