BEAUTY'S TEN VICTIMS

LIFE AS PRICE RF A SMILE lu six years ten men have paid with their lives for having loved “ La Rouge Rosine,” a red-robed, red-headed Parisian beauty whose fatal spell has just claimed as victim a mysterious figure in the Paris and London underworld. Midnight, Place Pigalle, in the heart of gay Montmartre, Paris. A woman,, robed in red, with a mass of red hair; under her red hat, steps from a taxi, and moves towards a dark-skinned, handsome man of thirty-six, who has been waiting for her. Before she can take the outstretched hand another man steps out of the shadow and fires two revolver shots at the waiting man, who drops to the pavement lifeless, while the other takes to his heels and vanishes. The woman springs back into the car, and cries an address- to the driver, without as much as a look at the man sha had come to meet. According to the police, the woman was “La Rouga Rosine,” sometimes known as “ Poil da Carotte,” otherwise “ Carroty Hair,”* and the victim is a mystery man who used the name of “ Don Carlos.” His real name was Alba Sandra, tba scapegrace son of a noble Spanish' family. Three yeas ago he was forced, to quit London as a result of a scandal. It was his fascination by “ La Rouge Rosine ” that cost him his life, and ho is the tenth man to pay that price in six years. Seven who. fell under her spell died by the bullet or the knife of assassins, and three at the hands of tha public executioner. It is not suggested by the police that “ La Rouge Rosine ” is criminally implicated in the latest death drama, but they want to interview her because they think she can help them to trace tha man who shot “ Don Carlos.” “ Rosine ” has been known in certain Montmartre resorts for some.years. Reputed to be wealthy, she claims that the Bohemian life is so much in her, blood that she cannot give it up. Men of wealth and position have wanted t« marry her and take her away from the life, but she refuses all these offers. The first time her fatal fascination cost the life of a man it nearly cost her life as well. The bullet passedthrough her body before it struck the man sha had tried to save. The assassin was guillotined, and Rosina was in hospital for six weeks. On another occasion she was invited to dine in a private salon with two men who were infatuated with her. When the meal was finished the men declared their intention of fighting a duel with revolvers for her, and she had to remain in the room, helpless, while they exchanged shots. One was killed outright, and the other died of his wound the next day. - When another of her admirers died from the assassin's bullet last year the police suspected the mvsterious Don Carlos, and it is now surmised that tha latest crime is a sequel to the other.
