GENEROUS INVITATION

MAYOR AS MELBOURNE'S GUEST “ GIFT FROM THE BLUE " The invitation which the mayor and mayoress of Dunedin have received to be the guests of the city of Melbourne during the centenary celebrations and the visit of the Duke of Gloucester includes the payment of all expenses. Tho generosity of the compliment to Dunedin was appreciated by the City Council last night. The mayor forwarded a minute applying for leave of absence for one month to visit Melbourne during the centenary celebrations. On the motion of Cr H, C. Campbell, seconded by Cr W. A. Scott, the leave was granted. Cr A. H Allen said ho thought they should do more than merely grant the application. On behalf of the council, he took the opportunity of saying that they all hoped that the mayor and mayoress would have a very enjoyable holiday, and that Mr Cox would return benefited from the rest.

Endorsing the remarks, Or J. L. M'lndoe said he felt sorry, with other councillors, that they all did not have the opportunity of visiting Melbourne. Or J- J. Marlow congratulated the mayor on the compliment of the invitation not only to himself, but to the city. He asked the mayor to convey to Melbourne the appreciation of the people of Dunedin.

“ I can assure you that it was a surprise to receive such a generous invitation and offer to have expenses paid across to Melbourne and while there for myself and the mayoress,” said Mr Cox. “It was indeed something like a gift from tho blue ( and, naturally, it is very much appreciated, recognising, of course, that it was an honour done to Dunedin. I will do my best to worthily represent Dunedin at the celebrations, and will certainly convey the good wishes of this city to Melbourne.” Cr Campbell: Do you want the de-puty-mayor to carry your bag? The Mayor: I will need him here to carry on while I am away.
