SUNDAY CONCERTS

TOWN CLERK TO DEAL WITH REQUESTS CITY.COUNCIL'S DECISION Apparently on account of tlio City Council’s resolve not to be drawn into any further lengthy discussions on the matter of Sunday concerts, there was very little talk at last night’s meeting on Cr A. H. Allen’s motion to the effect that all future requests for Sunday concerts or entertainments be dealt with by the town dork in terms of the resolutions of April 17, 1929, and July 18, 1954. Only Cr M. Silverstone spoke in criticism of the motion, his contention being mainly that it was unfair to place the responsibility on to one of the council’s officers.

In submitting his motion, Cr Allen said he was not going to speak at length on a subject on which there had been enough unpleasant and undignified discussions at City Council meetings. He wished simply to leave the matter to the councillors, who would know what they were voting for or on. He would just like to say that on April 17, 1929, they had given permission to several bands to give Sunday performances by rota, either in the afternoon or evening, under certain conditions, and that on July 18 of this year they had carried a resolution that no further permits be granted for Sunday concerts.

The motion was seconded by Cr AV, H. Borrie.

Cr Silverstone asked what the policy of tlxo council was. They might as well say that a resolution passed in 1865 should take precedence over all others. They might also reintroduce laws made in the time of King Charles I. As a matter of fact, some of them were in force now. The position was ridiculous. They were handing the matter over to the town clerk, who would probably get into trouble with the citizens

A Councillor i No, no. Cr Silverstone: But yes, yes. You will see. We should not throw the responsibility on to an officer of the city. You cannot have /it both ways. The last resolution should take precedence. The resolution as it stands will not got the council out of its trouble. The last .resolution wipes out all others. It states that no further permission will be given to hold Sunday concerts. Nobody responded to the mayor’s query as to whether there was to be any further discussion, and on being put to the vote Cr Allen’s motion was carried, only Crs Silverstone and Scott voting against it.
