THE NORTH GROUND

RETENTION BY GRANGE CRICKET CUB Whilst the annual meeting of the Grange Cricket Club last night expressed its appreciation of what the City Corporation had done la'st cricket season for the improving of tho conditions of the North Ground for match play, it was decided to make further representations to Mr Tannock and the Reserves Committee to place the big roller over the ground before it became hard. Mr 0. Stevens wrote stating that, whilst he was deeply sensible of the honour conferred upon him as the club’a representative on the Otago Cricket Association, he felt that the avowed object of the reason of his own particular representation' had been fulfilled. He wished, however, to warn the members of his club that they Could not too zealously guard their rights to see that first grade matches continued to be played on the vNorth Ground, and, whilst it was his opinion that tho association appreciated the value of the North Ground from the point of view of public interest in cricket to a greater extent than it appeared to have done in the past, nevertheless the claims of the North Ground should again be brought before the council, and the same strong evidence brought to the annual meeting of the delegates as was the case last year. It was no mere idle statement to say that if first grade matches were lost to their club on the home ground that would spell the deathknejl of the Grange Club. Mr W. M. Beal said that tho ground had been greatly improved by the City . Corporation, and on his motion it wa* decided to send a yoto of tnanks to that body for what it had done. He further contended that the ground was in better condition to-day than it had been for many years, and if the corporation’s big roller was brought on to the ground now , while it was in a soft condition a first-class fielding area would be provided for the cricketing season. , It was resolved to approach the reserves department with Mr Beal’s suggestion in view.
