BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

SHEEP VALUES IMPROVE Bullocks on the average maintained late prices at the Burnside sales today, while cows and heifers were a little dearer than before. From a poor start, fat sheep improved in value, being as much as 3s 6d in some instances above last week's level. Pigs also experienced a better sale. In both quality and numbers, the entry of fat cattle fell below last week’s level. There were 257 yarded, and prime heavy bullocks were not very prominent, but medium sorts made up a fair proportion of the penning. As usual, tnere was a tail end of light and unfinished stuff. There was a much larger percentage of heifers and cows than in previous weeks, and in this section the quality was below the grade of recent yardings. Country butchers were again present, but their competition was shown only on medium and light sorts. At values almost as good as last week’s, there was a brisk demand from the start, prices remaining firm until the last race was reached, when an improvement was recorded on all classes. This rise took values fully 10s a head above the opening rates. Bullocks averaged about the same values as last week, and prime cows and heifers were about 10s dearer than before. The highest price was secured by Mr John Murray, of Mosgicl, whose draft sold at £l3 12s 6d. Other good consignments from Balclutha sold from £l2 10s to £l3 10s.

Only six spring lambs came forward. Competition for these was good at values showing an increase on last week’s rates.

A small entry of fat sheep—about 1,150 —included some very good ewes and wethers, but the average qaulity seen was below the standard of last \j,eek. The sale opened on a race of poor quality sheep, and this did not give much indication of values. The market evened on the second race, where better quality sheep were offered, prices rising 2s Cd above last week’s average. After the sale had started some Oamaru butchers came on the market, their competition accounting for a further rise. When half the sale was completed values had risen from 3s to 3s Cd above last week’s market. Because of the small yarding, the keen demand, and extra outside competition, it was thought that values would not recede—in fact, there was an impression amongst some that before the finish prices would show a further rise.

A very small entry of vealers of inferior quality sold at late rates, while one pen of three-year-old steers in the store cattle pens sold well at £5 15s. One pen of two-year-olds brought £‘\ 9s, and heifers sold to £2 10s. Boner cows brought recent values. There were 122 fats and seventy-two stores in the pig pens. A keen sale resulted, and prices showed a rise. Bacon pigs were worth about 6d lb, selling from £2 15s to £3 10s. while porkers were equal to about 6.’d lb. These sold from £1 10s to £2 15s.
