POPULAR OPERATIC CONCERT

A large number of Dunedin's most accomplished singers will combine in a most interesting programme in His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday evening. Mr Wilfred Kershaw and Mr Alfred Walmsley will sing the rousing opening scene from Gounod’s ‘ Faust,’ and with Miss Lilian McDonald, of Timaru, the final trio from the same opera. Miss M'Donald has spent many years studying in Australia, and her dramatic acting and singing will also be given expression in that tremendous scene from Act 1. of ‘ Cavalleria Rusticana,’ where the beautiful ‘ Faster Hymn ’ (sung by the Grand Opera Club Chorus) is followed by the quarrel. Signorina Rossi will have a fine opportunity to use her remarkable voice in the famous duo from Act 11. of 1 Rigoletto,' in which she will bo associated with Mr Don M'lnnes, the young Timaru baritone; while the well-known cpiartot from the same opera will lie included in tire next scene, the princinal singers being Signorina Rossi, Miss Bertha Uawlinson. Mr Alfred Walmsley, and Mr Don M'lnnes. Mr Fvan Tuckwell will sing the part of Spartofucilo in this number. Portion of the opening of ‘ Pagliacci will give Mr Arthur Macdonald tire prologue to sing. These numbers are all in costume, which, of course, adds tremendously to their effectiveness. Mr Mason Harould and Mrs Ruddenklau (an outstanding mezzo-soprano from Timaru) have solo numbers from ‘ Pagliacci ’ and ‘ Cavalleria ’ respectively. Miss Maude JCenward makes a beautiful study of Mother Lucia, while Mr Clem Howell and Miss Madge Tuckwell have interesting parts. Accompaniments are played by piano and organ, no orchestra being used. The box plans opened at Begg’s this morning.
