RUSSIA’S NEW STATUS TO .HAVE PERMANENT SEAT Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright GENEVA, September 10. (Received September 11, at 11 a.m.) The League Council, at a private meeting, unanimously agreed to the Soviet having a permanent seat on the Council. Argentina and Portugal abstained from voting. DISARMAMENT DISCUSSION POSTPONED UNTIL NEXT assembly. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 10. (Received September 11, at noon.) Sir John Simon, who is head of the British delegation to the League of Nations Assembly, is one of the twentythree Foreign Ministers of various countries taking part in the meeting. M. Sandler was elected president by 49 votes to 3. The Canadian, Prime Minister (Mr R. B. Bennett) was elected president of the League Assembly’s Economic Commission. Owing to lack of progress in disarmament M. Sandler proposed postponement until next Assembly of the convocation of the committee to harmonise the Kellogg Pact for outlawing war and the League Covenant. This was approved. In his presidential address Dr Benes referred to the decisive importance of the efforts to conclude a pact of mutual assistance for Eastern Europe.
