AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP MISS GAISFORD IN FINAL Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, September 10. The semi-finals of the Australian championship commenced late this morning. Miss Gaisford beat Mrs Russell, 4 and 2. Mrs Robinson beat Miss Kay, 1 up. Miss Kay largely owed her defeat to a number of missed short putts. Nevertheless, her opponent played superb all-round golf. She was accurate on the greens, sinking one 30footer. Mrs Robinson gave the impression that she was going for everything, while the New Zealander played with restraint. Both got splendid length with their tee shots, and, although their seconds were occasionally poor, they made some wonderful recoveries. After being two down at the thirteenth Miss Kay won the fourteenth, halved tne fifteenth, missed a 3ft putt to lose the sixteenth, and won the seventeenth. Both were on the green in three at the eighteenth. They missed short putts and halved in fives, to give the Sydney player the match. Miss Gaisford was too strong for Mrs Russell. She turned one up, lost the tenth, when she took three putts, and then won the eleventh. Mrs Russell was disqualified at the twelfth for drying the ball, which lodged in a pool of water. Miss Gaisford, with two halves and two wins, took the match at the sixteenth. She will meet Mrs Robinson in the thirty-six-hole final tomorrow.
