CHESS

OTABO CLUB The monthly meeting of the Otago Chess Club was held on Saturday evening, those present being the president (Mr D. Harris Hastings) and Messrs E. F. Evans, A. M‘Loan, J. Crow, G. D. Wright, W. Lang, J. S. M. Lawson, and the hon. secretary (Mr W. Herbert) . Correspondence was received from the Wellington Chess Club relative to the telegraphic match being conducted with the club, and the New Zealand Chess Association advising that the question of Australian competitors competing in New Zealand championships was to have further consideration at ajneeting in Wellington on September 27. The President reported that a committee had w'aited upon His Excellency Lord Bledisloe during his recent visit to Dunedin and presented him with a gold ’key of the club rooms, and also intimated the club’s desire that he should accept a life membership of the Otago Chess Club. His. Excellency has been pleased to accept the key and life membership with suitable acknowledgement. The committee’s actions in this matter were formally endorsed. It was decided to extend an invitation to the Oamaru Chess Club to visit Dunedin and play the annual match over the hoard. It was reported that Mr H. Douglas (an ex-Dunedinite now resident in Wellington, and one of the Otago delegates on the New Zealand. Chess Association) was about to undergo a minor operation for a complaint that had been troubling him for some time. The secretary was instructed to convey the Otago Club’s wishes to Mr Douglas for a speedy recovery. A Library Committee consisting of Messrs Hastings, -Lang, and Herbert was appointed to classify the club’s library books. THE BLEDISLOE CUP Last evening the conclusion of play between the Wellington and Otago Chess Clubs took place by telegraph for the Bledisloe Cup. Play commenced at 6.30, and on most hoards continued until the closing of the telegraph at 11. As reported on the previous evening’s play, - the Otago team was in., a good position, having two boards with a piece up on each, another with a troublesome passed pawn, which the Wellington player was having difficulty in stopping, and yet another game in which, although a pawn was down, there was an attack which appeared impossible to stave off. On appearances Otago had four games secure against Wellington’s one. As the moves came through this opinion was confirmed, as one Wellington player resigned early, and then hoards 12, 6, and 14 resigned midway through the evening. There was a considerable number of visitors present during the evening, and the games as a whole were both interesting and instructive. The following are the names of the players in their respective teams and their scores at the conclusion of the games; Otago. AVellingion.

‘Games have gone for adjudication. On board 3 the Wellington player seems to have given a move where the Otago player wins his queen. The move has been disputed, and the game has gone to the Chess Association, for an opinion. __________
