SWIMMING CENTRE

FORMATION OF NEW GLOBS AUSTRALIANS’ TOUR At last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association two further applications for affiliation from country clubs were dealt with. Matters in reference to the tour of Australians in November and December were also dealt with. The president (Mr W. A. Jenkins) presided, and there were also present: Messrs D. C. Bannatynp, R. A. Baker, W. L. Colvin, S. Brown, A. Findlay, I. L. Turnbull, B. Kerr, C. Dawkins, I. L. Turnbull, and E. C. Isaacs (bon. secretary). The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Dawkins, a new delegate from the Life Saving Society. AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS. The secretary of the Oamaru Club (Mr A. Curie) wrote advising that the committee had decided to co-operate with the centre in the tour of the Australian swimmers, and asked to be scheduled for one appearance, preferably on a Saturday night. It was reported that in the tentative itinerary Oamaru had been allotted a Saturday night. The Secretary of the Elmwood Club (Christchurch) wrote that at a recent meeting Mr D. H. Symes had given some information regarding the visit of the Australian swimmers, R. Clark and H. Tickle, and the coach, Mr D. Hellmrich. Subject to the permission of the Canterbury Centre, has committee had decided' to accept an appearance. The Southland Centre advised acceptance of two appearances and agreeing to the guarantees asked for. The Wellington Club advised that December 30 was an unsuitable date for it to hold a carnival, but asked if it would be possible for another date early in the tour to be offered to it. The Secretary advised that the arranging of the definite itinerary had been held over until word was received from the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia that the invitation bad been accepted, but it should be possible to arrange for an earlier date for an appearance in .Wellington by a slight re-arranging of the itinerary which would also make for an earlier appearance at Ashburton. The final arrangements for the tour were left in the hands of the chairman, secretary, and Mr Kerr, who were empowered to make any alteration in the itinerary that might be nec.essary. The secretary was also instructed to reply to the Elmwood, Wellington, and Oamaru Clubs, and the Southland Centre, advising what was being done. CLUB AT MILTON. The Chairman said that. a club had been formed at Milton, and a meeting would be held on Wednesday for the purpose of drawing up a constitution. The new club was very keen on participating *in the tour by the Australian swimmers, and it might be possible to arrange for the visitors to be motored to Milton on a Saturday afternoon for the purpose of appealing at a carnival there. It would be a good outing for the Australians. On the motion of Mr Findlay, it was decided to forward to Milton all the information required in regard to affiliation, and to endeavour to arrange for an appearance of the Australian swimmers there if possible. CROMWELL CLUB’S APPLICATION. The Secretary of the Cromwell Club (Mr S. • Bragg) advised that it had been decided to affiliate with the Otago Centre. He also sought further information concerning the tour of the Australian swimmers. The Chairman reported that he would be visiting Cromwell this week, and it was left to him to supply Mr Bragg with particulars regarding affiliation, and also as to an appearance from the Australian team, RESIGNATION OF TREASURER. The resignation was received as treasurer of "Mr E. G. James, who wrote stating that he had been connected with both the competitive and administrative sjdes of swimming continuously for over twenty years, but now felt it his duty to hand over to someone who could devote more time and personal interest to the work. The Chairman said that Mr James had done yeoman service for swimming, and they were glad to know that although he was resigning the treasurership he would not sever his connection with swimming altogether, as he would probably again act as a delegate from the Oamaru Club, while he was also a vice-president of the centre. In moving that the resignation be accepted with great regret Mr Jenkins suggested that the centre should mark the resignation by something more than a formal vote of thanks. Mr James had been associated with the Otago Club when it was the only club here, and was one of the founders of the y.M.C.A. Club. He thought an illuminated minute might bo presented to Mr James. The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided to make a presentation to Mr James of an illuminated minute on the occasion of the annual meeting. Mr Brian, Kerr was appointed to fill the vacancy as treasurer. BIG HANDICAP SUGGESTED. The Secretary brought forward a proposal that had been tried in Sydney and which had been outlined to him by Mr Dudley Hellmrich, secretary of the New South Wales Amateur Swimming Association. It was that, with a view to raising funds, a grand 50yds handicap should be held and the cooperation of all the clubs sought. If trophies were donated the amount of the entries would be profit for the centre, and with the co-operation of all the clubs there was no reason why such a race should not bring in a good sum and perhaps be held monthly. The idea was that each club should run off heats, the winners then to meet in the domi, semi, and final of the handicap. Besides improving the finances it would create interest among all classes of swimmers. The executive was instructed to go fully into the proposal with a view to drawing up conditions for such an event. GENERAL. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on October 4. Members referred to the fact that nothing had as yet been done concerning the provision of the club room at the municipal baths, and the secretary was instructed to again write to the town clerk on the matter, and also asking if anything would be done to improve the seating accommodation before the Australian swimmers appeared in Dunedin.
