CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
HAWKE'S BAY TO COMPETE Advice has been received that the youngest centre in the dominion, the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre, will be represented in the New Zealand cross-country championship at Wingatui next Saturday, this bringing the number of provinces taking part to six. There are three clubs in Hawke’s Bay, comprised of sixty ' or' seventy members, the Hastings Club being formed in 1932, and Napier and Daunevirko this year. In its, first season the new centre will be represented in the big race, and its sporting action is much appreciated by athletic enthusiasts locally. The team comprises C. Wright (Hastings).—A very solid runner, who sets a hard pace from the start, and who is expected to run well up. He was club champion in 1933 and this year, and is the first provincial champion of Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay. He was eleventh in the Wellington championship in a big field last year. He gained fastest time in a road race last year from'Hastings to Napier, his time for the thirteen miles being Ih 20min. His best times over 6J miles (the New Zealand championship distance) are 36.29 min and 37min. He limits himself to harrier running, not taking part in track running. He is twenty-two years of age, sft IDin tall, and weighs Hat. A. Lord (Napier) .—Club champion and runner-up to Wright in the provincial championship. This is his first season as a harrier. His time for the 6i miles is 37.7. His age is twentyeight; height, 6ft sin; weight, 9st. T. Venn (Napier Club). —A very easy runner, with plenty of staying power. Runner-up.to A. Lord in club championship. Makes a specialty of vaulting, and clears his fences in a minimum of time. Won the Mardi Gras marathon (eleven miles), the field including A. L. Stevens, the wellknown Wellington distance runner. He gained fastest time in the Napiei 1 Club’s road race (six miles) in 33min 27sec. Represented Napier A.A.C.C. as a distance runner in interclub events. Age thirty-one; sft Ilia tall; weight, 10.3. A. Preston (Dannevirke). Club champion of Hastings, 1932. Club champion Dannevirke, 1934. Holder three-mile track Hawke’s Bay-Poverty ■ Bay provincial championship. Won Mardi Gras marathon, 1932-33. Won Wellington B grade provincial championship, 1932, winning by quartermile in fast time. Competed New Zealand 1 cross-country championship in 1932 as an individual, vrepresenting Hastings Club, and, finishing in twentyfirst place through lack of racing. Age, twenty-three; height, sft lOin; weight;-, 10.4. B. Reid (Napier).—Good, _ stylish runner. First season as a harrier. Has a. good record on tlm track. Age, twenty-five years; height, sft 9in; weight, lOst. A. Robertson (Hastings).—Runnerup club championship. Age, twentythree; height, sft lOin; weight, 10.0. The manager will be Mr A. Angus, who will have claims to be regarded as the youngest manager at tho championship. He is only twenty-three years-of age.
