BABY STOLEN BY LIONESS
FATHER'S FATEFUL SHOT Two Northern Rhodesian settlers, Mr and Mrs Dechampel, had a terrifying experience when camping in the African jungle a few weeks ago. The couple had pitched their tent for the night by the Kafue River, and were peacefully steeping when a lioness entered and carried off their baby daughter. Mr Dechampel awoke just as the lioness was disappearing through the tent flap. He raised the alarm and natives set up a terrific din to startle tho beast, which, however, disappeared into the jungle with the baby between its teeth. The father, armed with a rifle, and natives armed with spears, immediately set up a pursuit, and at last found the lioness lying in a small clearing with the crying baby beside it. Mr Dechampel raised his rifle for the fateful shot and took careful aim. The shot rang out, and the lioness fell dead. He ran forward and anxiously picked up his daughter. The baby, although terrified, was little the worse for her adventure. ■
