EDDIE CANTOR’S RETURN

IN 1 WHOOPEE ' FOR ST. JAMES ‘ Whoopee,’ the film in which Eddie Cantor made his screen reputation, will be presented for a return season at the St. James Theatre on Friday. Those goo-goo eyes, catchy songs, snappy music, and beantilul grids, lor which every Cantor film is well known, are all there in a technieolour production which for entertainment has seldom been surpassed since the picture was first brought to New Zealand four years ago. -Many people have seen the film before, but are undoubtedly keen to see it again. When Eddie and Mr Underwood are sprawled on the kitchen floor “ swapping ” operations, when the hero plays the°blaekface singing cook after being tangled up in an oven when a gas explosion occurs, when he plays the mountain bandit for a couple of gallons of petrol, and when he is created a “ brave ” of the, Indian tribe, the audience is swept with gales of laughter. Those happy tunes, ‘ Whoopee, Ihe Girl Friend of a Boy Friend, ‘ I Belong to You,’ and ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me,’ are sung in Cantor s distinctive manner, and the accompaniment* is plaved in just that way to get everybody’s feet tapping. The production is right up to date m technical details, so the public is treated to what amounts to a recent picture. No trouble or expense was spared to round, off the settings, and the scale on winch they are done is another feature worth seeing again. *
