SUBSIDISED SHIPPING
THE PACIFIC TRADE BRITAIN BADLY HANDICAPPED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September 7. 4 The Times,’ in a leader, says that British shipowners are gratified by the joint Australian-New Zealand statement with regard to foreign subsidised shipping. 44 No impartial person could maintain that British shipping has had a fair deal in the Pacific, especially as trade between the United States and Honolulu is reserved for American vessels. The Union Colnpany’s statement that it intends immediately to call for tenders in Britain for the construction of a fast steamer for the Pacific route is practical support of the view that British shipbuilders can expect tobenefit when reasonable treatment is afforded British shipping. The transpacific competition is only one, though it is a glaring, instance of subsidised competition. Happily the British shipowners can look forward to something approaching a fair deal in the future.”
