SOCCER KNOCK-OUT WINS TO MSLYN AND NORTHERN Tn the second round of the knock-out competition at the “ Cale,” wins were registered by Roslyn-Wakari and Northern against High School Old Boys and Maori Hill respectively. The winners will meet Technical and Mosgiel in the semi-finals nest Saturday. OLD BOYS DEFAULT TO ROSLYN When the first match ended with the score 1 all, Roslyn-Wakari were awarded the decision by High School Old Boys. Played in heavy rain and on a slippery ground, the game was fast throughout, Roslyn showing more dash and better combination. The teams were;— Roslyn-Wakari.—Harhorne; Ramage, Copland; Welham, Scott, M'Callion; Lennon. Oliver, Chisholm, Munsie,. and Rutherford. H.S.O.B.—Smith, Pickerill, Chapman; Beal, Bringans, Romeril; ?. and G. Ltaimer, Duncan, Groves, and Grant.

Decidedly in Roslyn’s favour, the first spell was devoid of colourful football', and ended 1 up to the hill eleven. 'After plugging away steadily in School’s half for the first twenty minutes, Roslyn capped their efforts with a good goal from Rutherford’s centre shot, which Smith partly cleared, but Munsie tapped through off the rebound. A similar goal for School during one of their few breakaways was missed by Groves, who skied an easy chance, although on the day he played soundly. Fortunes fluctuated for a time in the latter half, which opened with much neat and fast play. Several times Roslyn looked dangerous, hut School soon began to rally and had things their own way for a time, when Harborne was kept busy defending shots from near and far. But a lovely rising kick from C. Latimer, > standing about 25yds out, passed over the heads of several players in the goal area, to find the top corner of the net to equalise the scores. For the remainder of the spell Roslyn had the upper hand, and when time was called and the scores had been unaltered, the teams were ordered to change ends and play on for extra' time, but Chapman consulted his team, which decided to give the match to Roslyn. M'Calliou and Munsie _ were Roslyn’s best performers, whilst Romeril and Duncan were Old Boys’ outstanding men. Final:— Roslyn-Wakari 1 High School Old Boys ... 1 Mr F. G. Smith was referee. EASY WIN FOR NORTHERN Solid football characterised the Northern-Maori Hill game, in which every goal was hard-earned, Northern running out winners by 4 to 2. The teams were:— Northern.—Jones, G. Anderson, Wallace ; Perry, Coats, Sutherland; Cullen, M'Hugh, Henderson, Connolly, and Little. Maori Hill.—Holden; Taylor, Bayne; Morris, Brown, Thompson; Gordon, Dalziel, Baird, Davidson, and Evans. Much spectacular positional play by Maori Hill was seen during the first quarter-hour, which was held for the most part in Northern’s territory. Several splendid shots were well saved and cleared, and a quick reverse brought Northern the only goal of the spell. From a throw-in 10yds inside Northern’s half Connolly beat the opposition, and dribbled down the flank to pass eventually to Henderson, who cleverly sidestepped Holden when he rushed him and coolly goaled with a fine cross-shot. Maori Hill resumed the attack, and the combination of their halves and forwards prevented Northern from breaking through again . before half-time, when heavy rain again set in. Northern started the, second half strongly, one foreward movement, in which Connolly and Little figured, almost succeeding. Maori Hill asserted themselves, and entered opposition territory, but a series of long passes again put Northern in a good position, Cullen, M'Hugh, and Henderson moving to the goal. The latter’s shot was cleared by Holden, but Coats trapped and drove hard back into the net. Ten minutes later, after a period of weak offensive play by Maori Hill, Northern came away to notch their third goal. Henderson placed a fine pass from M'Hugh to Cullen. who shot, the ball striking the upright and bouncing in. Maori Hill then opened their tally with a bright manoeuvre. Davidson sending a long pass out to Gordon, whose centre hit the crossbar, but Baird was there to* make sure of it. Gordon also was responsible for Maori Hill’s second goal, scored a moment afer the first. He took the ball near halfway, beat three backs, and centred for Davidson to net. Northern swiftly retaliated. From the kick-off M'Hugh received, kicking well upfield. Taylor misheaded, and Henderson trotted forward to shoot a neat one. Luck was with Maori Hill as time drew nigh, two goals being narrowly saved, and Northern were still attacking when the final whistle sounded with the scores:— Northern 4 Maori Hill 2 Mr A. Paterson was referee. SECOND DIVISION. Leith B defaulted to Caversham. IN OTHER CENTRES AUCKLAND Thistle 5, Comrades 3. North Shore 7, Onehunga 2. Ponsonby 3, Y.M.C.A. 2.
