CROMWELL BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Cromwell Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. Present: Cr C. C. Sanders (deputymayor); Crs N; C. Yeoman, F. W. Partridge, L. M. Jolly, .1- Hoskings, W. Brown, W. Murray, and J. L. Stewart Wright, _ ■ The Hon. Secretary, Cromwell Plunkef Society, wrote taking exception to the council’s use of the word “ Plunket ” on tickets recently sold for a picture benefit without any authority from the Pluhket Committee. Cr Wright said the whole .matter had been arranged by the mayor, the proceeds going towards the cost of furnishing the ladies’ rest room, on the door of which was a sign with the words “ Plunket and Women’s Rest Room.” Cr Sanders said the society had little to complain about, and on his suggestion it was decided merely to receive the letter. At the suggestion of the borough solicitors it rvas resolved that it be declared that the provisions of section 128 of the Public Works Act, J 928, shall not apply to that portion of Melmore terrace in the town of Cromwell extending from Acliil street to the Cromwell bridge. Cr W. Murray, reporting for the Works Committee, said 207yds or gravel had been carted and spread, and a considerable amount of forming and gravelling of footpaths had been carried out. He drew attention to the broken condition of the tar-seahng on the main street, and it was resolved that the Main Highway Board be communicated with regarding the repair of the surface. A further grant of LIU to complete the repair of the back streets was granted. . Cr F. W. Partridge, reporting for the Water Committee, that there was a full supply of water in the. Firewood Creek Reservoir which had been supplying the town, while the Mount Pisa race was being cleaned out. That race, he said, would be completed and the water would be turned in next The Town Clerk reported a credit balance of £Bl, and accounts amounting to £127 6s were passed for payment. , „ ~ A general rate of 2s 2d for the year ending March 31; 1935, was struck and made payablp on September 30.
