HUGHES BEATS RAYNER [Per United Press Association. 1 BLENHEIM, September 9. Archie Hughes (Auckland) outpointed Clarrio Rayner (Blenheim), the New Zealand feather-weight champion, in a 15-round light-weight contest before a packed house. Both weighed 9.3 L Hughes had the benefit of lengthy experience and a heavy punch with both hands. It was an excellent in-fighting bout, Rayner performing well to keep the margin down with solid body punching. WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS The winners of the West Coast boxing championships were; — Fly-weight.—J. Mathieson (Reefton). Bantam-weight.—J. Baton (Greymouth). Feather-weight.—W. Hawes (Westport) . Light-weight.—L. Hawes (Westport). Welter-weight.—J. Higgins (Westport) and J. Cox (Greymouth). Middle and light-heavy.—M. Howson (Greymouth). PETERSEN AND GAINS LONDON, September 8. Petersen and Gains have finished their training for Monday’s White City Empire heavy-weight title fight. The attendance is expected to bo 20,000. Petersen will receive £5,000, win, lose, or draw. Gains is boxing on a percentage of the gate receipts. He stated that he realises that defeat by Petersen means the virtual end of his ring career as far as championship fighting is concerned.
