MANCHESTER UNITY

The monthly meeting of the Loyal Tapanui Lodge was well attended by members, N.G.-Bro. A, Fleming presiding. Mourning was observed out of respect for P.G. Bro. James Stee], whose death occurred on August 27. Bro. Steel joined the lodge in 1869 and passed through the chairs in 1878. At tho time of his death he had the distinction of being the senior member in the Otago district. Several members made reference to his long service as an Oddfellow, and a resolution of sympathy was carried with his widow and family. As an old settler of the district Bro. Steel was well_ known, and the large attendance at his funeral indicated the respect in which he was held. The pallbearers were the six oldest past grands of the lodge—Bros. J. Wylie, T. Edwards, J. D. Edgar, W. Eskdale, P. Thomson, and J. Sim. Letters of sympathy were also forwarded to the family of the late Mr John Edgar, and to the Loyal Timaru Lodge on the death of P.S. Bro. A. Goodall. One new member was initiated and one proposition for membership received. A committee was set up to make arrangements for the annual ball next month, and N.G. Bro. Fleming, P.G. Bro. E. M'Auley, and P.S. Bro. E. Arnold were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the District Committee at Oamaru. At tho conclusion of ordinary business the half-yearly meeting was resumed, and tho balance-sheet and auditor’s report adopted.. With a membership of 202 tho sick and funeral fund stood at £14,623, showing a satisfactory increase for the period under review. The official visit to the Loyal Outram Lodge proved a most successful function, attracting a large number of brethren from the city lodges. The attendance was close on 200, which must ho in the vicinity of a record tor the annual visit to Outram. The Loyal Mosgiel Lodge also was represented by a - strong contingent of members. P.G.M. Bro. A. L. Hart and P.D.G.M. Bro. J. D. Cameron represented the district executive. The meeting was presided over by N.G. Bro. H. Walker, who expressed appreciation on behalt of the local brethren at the very fine response made by the city brethren to the invitation. This was the only visit the Outram Lodge receiver], and they looked forward to these functions. The N.G. introduced to members Dr Wylhe, the lodge medical officer, to whom he paid tribute for his services to the lodge. Lodges responding to the visitors’ toast were Loyal Valley, Albion, Centenary, Mosgiel, Dunedin, Caversham, Princess Mary, and Hand and Heart. The N.G. of the Mosgiel Lodge reminded members of the official visit to that lodge next month. The P.G.M., Bro. Hart, acknowledging the toast of the district executive, said he was gratified at the very fine response to the visit, which was very encouraging to the local lodge. Referring to the approaching district mooting, tho P.G.M. stated that the business paper for the meeting would be available within the next few days. P.D.G.M. Bro. Cameron also, responded, and congratulated the lodge on the success of the function. All the visits lately had been well attended, and this was indicative of the enthusiasm amongst members. They were sorry that P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Sligo would not be back in the dominion in time for the district meeting, but he had left England on the return voyage. The Outram brethren submitted a very enjoyable programme of instrumental and vocal items, which, met with the appreciation of all present. At the close of the programme Dr Wyllie moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, which was carried by acclamation. Following supper a dance was held, Mr S. M'Laren supplying the music. •The Loyal Caversham Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Wednesday evening, when N.G. Bro. Adam presided over a good muster of members. Included in the correspondence was a letter from the secretary of the Loyal Dalton (Balclutha) Lodge advising that the seventieth anniversary of that lodge would be held at Balclutha_ on September 22, and extending an invitation to the lodge to send delegates. The election of delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the Otago district at Oamaru was held over pending the receipt of the order paper. The Loyal Mosgiel Lodge wrote suggesting September 22 as the date for the annual Rugby match with Caversham Lodge, and this was agreed to, P.G. Bro. Russell being appointed manager and selector of the Caversham team. The lodge adjourned to carry out “ ladies’ evening,” which took'the form of a dance. Excellent music was supplied by the Kaikorai Trio, and the fifty couples present spent a happy evening. Bro. J. Millar- made an efficient M.C., while the work of the lodge Social Committee contributed materially to the success of the evening. _ At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Albion Lodge there was. a good attendance of members, many visiting brethren, including a member of the Loyal Cromwell Lodge, being also present. The latter, Bro. Dalton, was welcomed, and extended greetings from his lodge. N.G. Bro. L. Joseph presided over the meeting. Two new members were initiated. The election of six delegates to represent the lodge at the half-yearly district meeting created keen interest, four ballots being necessary before finality was reached. The following were elected G.M. Bro. Yarcoe, P.P.G.M. Bro. P. Stabb, P.S. Bro. A. G. Monk, P.G.’s Bros. L. Huntley, M. Stewart, and L. E. Anderson. Discussion on the order paper was held over until next lodge night. In connection with the seventieth anniversary of the lodge, which occurs during October, a committee was set up to make arrangements for suitably commemorating the occasion. It was decided to make application to the district for a membership medal to bo awarded to P.S. Bro. A. G. Monk,who had been responsible for the initiation of twenty-five new members into the lodge. Bro. Monk was the first member of the lodge to qualify for this distinction, and it was decided to place on record the lodge’s appreciation of his services. Arrangements were completed for tho entertainment of the combined juvenile lodges next lodge nigiit. During the evening P.P.G.M. Bro. G. Clark read to members letters' written by P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Sligo, describing his trip to tho Old Country, and these proved very interesting. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Clark at the conclusion _of the reading. A visitor to the meeting was P.D.g!m. Bro. J. D. Cameron, who responded to the toast of the District Executive.
