A double chart issued in Melbourne by one of the leading fielders quotes prices over the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup ranging from 66 to 40,000 to 1. There is only one way quoted at less than 100 to 1 and eight at less than 200 to 1. Well-named Juveniles. The Chokebore stable has received two more two-year-olds from Stonyhurst Stud to_ receive their initial education. One is Slasher, a colt by Rapier from Brambletye, dam of Thorndale, Prickles, Brambletqrp, Sharp -Thorn ,_ and_ Scarlet Rambler; and tho other is Tail Light, a gelding by Day Comet from Owlscombe, by Autumnus from Glenowlet. Will Attract Attention. Orris and Chidden have been in solid work for some time, and in the Novice Stakes at Ashburton they will attract a good deal of attention (says the ‘Sun’). Both have grown into smart and shapely three-year-olds, and they are expected to take their share of the honours among gallopers of their own age. Which of the two is the better is a question that has been the subject of numerous debates.

Not True Form. The Sydney critic, “ Pilot,” cominentnig upon the Warwick Kami Meeting, says that The Masquerader’s trainer, F. D. Jones, was disappointed, as that horse had worked very well witii Nightly, and the latter’s second to Chatham appeared to enhance The Masquerader’s chance. I do not know whether anything happened to him in running, but it might be advisable for those who lost on him to give him another chance at his next appearance. It was not The Masquerader’s true form, nor was it that of Silver Ring, though, of course, the query is possible whether N d\v Zealand sprinting form of last autumn was as good as in some previous years. Useful Quartet. E. Seoullar has a team of four to enter upon the new season’s racing, comprising Strong Light, Madam Pompadour, General O’Duffy, and an untried three-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from Moulin Rouge, by Kilbroney from Directoire, and dam also of Latin Quarter. Strong Light looks in better order at present than ever previously, and some good races should come her way this term. Madam Pompadour and General O’Duffy, both by Arrowsmith, _ have shown sufficient promise in their essays to date to suggest they will he in evidence in the near future. The young member of the team is very well grown, and it is not intended to be in any hurry with him. A Full Stable. Manetho continues to make good progress in his work, and his trainer, F. Christmas, hopes that the good looking gelding will be able to give of his best in the new season, as he is sounder now than at any time previously. Christmas now has a full stable with Manetho, Jolly Beggar. Honour’s Lass, Fair Weather, Gold Paper, Friday Night, a three-year-old unnamed filly by Rosenor, and two two-year-olds, one a brother to Red Heckle' and Sky Rover, and tho other a brother to Honour’s Lass, by Honour from Grey Lass. Bright Shade, who has been somewhat of a disappointment, has been allotted a spell. Auckland Punters Sick. While the average Auckland racegoer was not very enthusiastic about which way tho cat jumped at tho Taranaki Hunt meeting last week, the punting fraternity, who arc never afraid to put iu the roll when a return is expected, experienced a sickening effect that was worse than the prevailing ’flu, states the ‘ Sun’s ’ Auckland correspondent. In fact, they had a double dose, as the “ good things,” Landlubber and

Lady Zinnia, clashed as well as crashed. After his forward running at Ellerslie last month, following on a long absence from racing, Landlubber’s admirers wore most optimistic, but when word arrived of Lady Zinnia’s final trials, and the money poured in from quarter, some of tho Landlubber people had their faith shaken and made an effort to save tho situation. _ With Orapai, the two horses mentioned were heavily supported for the two-day return. When the result was made known there was silence for a time, but when the reaction set in Lady Zinnia’s friends called her anything but a “ lady,” while the “ Landlubber ” crowd made for the Ouehunga seashore. The third party to tho risk, however, had a jovial eveniug. TROTTING NEWS. Reminder. Nominations for the New Zealand Cup close on September 27. Breeding in Southland, Tho well-bred marc, Merce Pointer, was foaled in 1918, but only two of her progeny are listed in the New Zealand Stud Book, her 1928 foal being Nelson Pointer, who recently joined J. Bryce’s stable, and a bay filly by Drusus, foaled in 1930. She has been mated with a number of different stallions without result. This season sho will be mated with Roy do Oro, who is standing the season iu Southland. Merce Pointer is by Logan Pointer from Merce, by Galindo—Authoress, by Wildwood— Thelma, by Kentucky, 'and lacks nothing on tho score of breeding. Llewellyn.

Llewellyn promises to do a big stud season in Southland this season, and amongst the mares that will visit him are Goldflower, Azaleas, Godetia. Lady Prince, Alva Lass, Logan’s Mission, and Wild Nita, both by Logan Pointer —Wild Queen, a mare by Happy Voyage—Logan’s Mission, and a mare by Happy Voyage—Regina Logan, the last-named a full sister to Native Chief.

Misfortune, the dam of Nelson’s Victory, and Carbinia, who left Journey’s End and Norman Fox, are to be mated with Rey de Oro. Fortune Chimes, by Four Chimes— MisfortuiiOj and Fortune Maid, by Adonis—Misfortune, will visit Worthy Bond. ' Unwieldy Fields.

In a discussion at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association on big fields in races on clubs’ programmes a member drew attention to the nominations received for trotting events at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting. In one race there were no fewer than thirtysix nominations, and if only fifteen of the limit horses wont to the post Hie field would be unwieldy, and half the starters would not have"a chance. This member expressed the opinion that the Geraldine course could only accommodate six horses and sulkies in a single line across the course, and everything would depend upon the draw for positions at the barrier, and he added, “ A few other things.”

Oamaru Spring Meeting. The secretary of the Oamaru Jockey Club states that his club is definitely going on with tho Spring Meeting arranged for September 29. An impression got abroad to the effect that, owing to tho North versus South Island Rugby match being played in Dunedin that afternoon, the meeting would not be held, but that is wrong, and nominations will close on Wednesday next, at 8 p.m.
