OTAGO HUNT CLUB BALL

Always one of tlie outstanding events of the social season, the ball held on Thursday evening in the Town Hall rivalled any of its predecessors in brilliance and gaiety. The hall presented a charming appearance with its lavish decorations of red and black—the club’s colours—while the stage, reserved for the orchestra and band, was a bower of feathery punga ferns, through which myriads of coloured lights twinkled. The vestibule was transformed by its decoration of ferns and pot plants, and a lavish arrangement of easy chairs and Chesterfields, into a comfortable lounge for sittingout, and here the guests were received by Mr J. M. Samson and the huntsmen. The grand march, with which the ball opened, was led by the master of the hunt (Mr J. E. Brunton) —who made a striking figure in his hunting pink, and his partner, Miss MTherson, in a frock of green and white checked taffeta. The next couple were the deputy-master (Mr 11. Greenslade) — also in hunting pink, and his partner, Miss M. Mathieson, who wore a charming frock of white organdie with a touch of green. Other huntsmen to follow were Mr •!. 11. Brown, partnered by Mrs Hastie, Mr Brunton, sen., and Mrs Brunton, and Mr and Mrs •). 3 Tow at.

Altogether, over 430 couples were present. A sumptuous banquet supper was served in the Concert Chamber, at which over 400 were accommodated at each sitting. Here the tables were arranged with • spring flowers set in dainty crystal vases.

The excellent arrangements were carried out by the four M.C.’s—Messrs W. Hastie, A. Dickson, S. M‘Kay, and R. Greenslade —to whom great praise is, due. Music was supplied by the Regimental Band and the New Collegians’ Orchestra, and in front of the stage was arranged a brush fence ‘over which two huntsmen on their mounts appeared to be just ready to take the jump. Pleasant interludes during the evening were two ballets, one by the pupils of Miss Lily Stevens (a Scotch ballet) and one by those of Miss Gwen Webster (a jockey ballet), and the singing of ‘ John Peel ’ and other hunting choruses by Mr A. Macdonald. Among the guests present were:— Miss lona Irwin, in violet crepe, with salmon-pink trimmings; Miss Lilas Samson, black satin; Airs W. Hastie, violet silk velvet; Mrs B.
