Hamblett, who took for his subject ‘ The Sanctity of Marriage.’ Mr Hamblett spoke of marriage from the three aspects set forth in the Prayer Book, and stressed the fact that home life forms the basis of national life. In the present day there was an everincreasing need for greater loyalty to marriage vows, and marriage should be regarded as a life-long, union. The home still holds the most lasting influence, and what a child learns there remains in the background of all thought throughout later life. Mr Hamblett’a address was followed with closest attention, and Mrs Wilson voiced the thanks of the meeting in a few graceful words. During the afternoon Mrs Robson rendered two delightful songs, and .Mrs Lawrence a singularly appropriate recitation. The Indies responsible for arranging the afternoon’s entertainment were Mesdames AA r arwick. Green, and Robson.

The largo number of members who gathered in the lounge of the Otago Women’s Club on Friday afternoon to boar a debate on the subject of rating on unimproved values showed the interest taken in such matters. Lady Ferguson was in the chair, and introduced the speakers—Mr AV. R. Brugh, who took the affirmative, and Mr C. B. Barrowclongh, who spoke against the proposition. Mr Brugh had so little to advance in favour of the proposal that Mr Barrowelough’s task was a comparatively easy one in consequence. At the conclusion, a motion was passed —“ That this meeting affirm the present system of rating.” Mrs AA 7 . B. Taverner, on behalf of those present, thanked the speakers for their explanation of the position.

Producers and the public are not very partial to beginners in the theatre. They usually pass them over in favour of the artist who has made some kind of reputation on the stage. It is an unfair principle, a fact that Miss Anita Wiukel has recognised, and in her forthcoming production of ‘ Children in Uniform ’ she proposes to give some gifted young players a chance to display their talents. All producers will recognise that there are pitfalls in giving leading parts to youngsters who cannot boast much experience, but in Miss Winkel’s forthcoming production with its cast of nccessiy of a younger generation there is so much talent and enthusiasm to achieve the ideal effects that the lack of experience is a minor consideration. In fact, the high standard which is promised by the rehearsals might well be envied by many an adult cast. ‘ Children in Uniform ’ is to be presented in the Concert Chamber for three nights, commencing on September 20, and the proceeds will be in aid of the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Association. Kaikorai Football Club Jubilee Ball. The jubilee ball held in the Early Set tiers’ Hall on Thursday evening was a great success, upwards of 300 couples being present. The hall was gaily decorated, and on the stage goal posts were erected supporting the jubilee dates, 1884-103-1. , Against one post leant the figure of an old-time player of the game holding a ball in his arms. The ball onened with the grand march, led by Mr V/. Sinclair (president of the club) and bis daughter. Miss Margaret Sinclair. A picturesque little ceremony took place at the conclusion of the march, when the whole company lined up eight deep, leaving an avenue down the centre. At the whistle Mr Sinclair kicked the bail up the hall, and the two small sons of Mr M. J. Mowat (a. staunch supporter of the club) came through the gap, dressed in the club's colours, and, proceeding on to the stage, placed the club’s banner between the goal posts ‘while the orchestra played • The Boys of the Old Brigade.’ They then turned and saluted. The arrangements for the ball were in the capable hands of Messrs J. A. Armit, H. V, Perry, J. A. Mowat, F. Ritchie, W. Scrivener, R. Herd, and M. Johnston, who acted as M.C.s.
